Duties
- Enter, manipulate and/or retrieve information and data from automated systems as appropriate to the area assigned.
- Complete request forms, manually or automated, for individual patient orders, blood work and other requests.
- Schedule appropriate patient appointments.
- Receive patients and visitors as the initial point of contact, in person or telephonically.
- Monitor and manage the messaging system at the clinic/practice level.
- Provide information regarding the practice, clinic, and hospital policies, procedures, and locations to patients, family members, staff, etc.
- Maintain all patients' records, both electronic and paper, according to regulation ensuring each entry contains proper patient and health care provider identification.
- Perform Quality Assurance monitoring, using appropriate tools regarding the completion and contents of the patients' record.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

General
Experience:
One year of general experience. General experience is progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled, such as performing receptionist and clerical duties, including greeting visitors, answering and directing phone calls, organizing and maintaining basic files, and using office automation systems to support daily administrative operations.
Education:
Two years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
Combination of
Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of by 60. Add the two percentages.
Specialized
Experience:
One year of specialized experience which includes performing clerical or administrative support in a medical clinic, including greeting patients, managing phone and secure messaging systems, scheduling and coordinating appointments, maintaining electronic and paper medical records, preparing routine correspondence and reports, and supporting patient in- and out-processing. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
