Position: 1:1 Para educator, Job 26-0542 CH

Starting Date: Sep 1, 2026

Job Summary

This is a 6.25‑hour per day, 180‑day per year, 1:1 Para educator position with benefits at Challenger Elementary School. The successful candidate will work under the direction of the teacher in a classroom with a student requiring 1:1 support in our Structured program, which serves students with Autism or other related characteristics. The Structured program focuses on functional communication, self‑regulation, and adaptive skills.

Instruction is delivered individually or in small groups (2‑4 students) to target non‑academic skills.

Hours and Schedule

8:45 a.m. – 3:30 p.m., 180 days per year.

Responsibilities
  • Assist teacher(s) with the daily supervision of students to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Administer student tests, collect and maintain diagnostic and test data, update student records, and assess student progress under the teacher’s direction.
  • Assist with monitoring and managing student behavior and progress; share observations with teacher(s) and other professional staff.
  • Assist with implementing strategies to address diverse student needs and support individual educational growth and achievement goals.
  • Provide clerical and general classroom assistance, including collection, data entry, correspondence, copying, filing, and preparation of classroom materials.
  • Administer first aid, medical assistance, physical support, and personal care for ill, medically fragile, and/or disabled children.
  • Provide physical assistance for students with special needs such as feeding, toileting, proper lifting and positioning of students in and out of chairs, and use of adaptive equipment; assist with specific equipment related to their disability.
  • Track and dispense authorized student medications.
  • Perform crossing guard duties before and after school to supervise and monitor students.
  • Assist with monitoring students in the cafeteria and/or at recess; maintain a clean and orderly environment for student safety and well‑being.
  • Participate in meetings and training to share information, improve employee skills, and implement school initiatives.
  • Comply with District Policies.
  • Maintain consistent presence at the assigned work site and regularly work the specified hours.
  • May be subject to reassignment of job duties depending on program, building, and student needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor(s).
Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Qualifications: Bilingual; de‑escalation strategies.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications: Basic WA State Para qualifications and experience working with children.

Hourly salary listed is the 2025‑2026 rate.

Education & Certification
  • Be at least eighteen years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent.
  • Meet one of the following requirements:
    • Hold an associate degree or higher from an accredited college or university.
    • Have earned 72 quarter credits or 48 semester credits at the 100 level or higher at an accredited college or university.
    • Completed an apprenticeship as a para educator in a program registered with the Washington State Apprenticeship and Training Council.
    • Received a passing score on one of the following PESB‑approved assessments:
      • ETS Para Pro Assessment
      • Pearson’s Paraprofessional Assessment
      • The Master Teacher Inc. Para educator Online Training Program
  • Depending on assignment, may be required to complete behavior‑modification programs, including safe physical restraining techniques and/or other training as required.
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of math, spelling, reading, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Desire and aptitude to work with students.
  • Ability to positively and professionally interact with students, supervisors, and staff.
  • Ability to work both independently and cooperatively in a team situation.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage student behavior.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail and meet deadlines in an atmosphere of frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to operate or willingness to learn to operate standard classroom equipment.
  • Ability to provide for the physical, health, and safety needs of students.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide physical assistance for and properly lift students in and out of chairs in accordance with safe lifting requirements and the use of adaptive equipment as required.
  • Knowledge of computer applications used to assist with student learning.
  • Ability to strengthen job‑related competencies.
