Overview of Position
A classroom teacher fosters and enhances an effective learning environment, facilitates development or revision of curriculum and instructional materials, establishes learning objectives and standards based on district guidelines, provides instruction, counsel, discipline, and supervision to meet individual student needs, and evaluates student performance and progress. The teacher instructs students in a self‑contained class or course, typically up to grade 5, and may also serve as a specialist in music, band, physical education, or other subject areas.
EssentialFunctions
- 25% Fosters an educational environment conducive to learning and maturation; plans instructional programs for individual students and whole groups; prepares lesson plans.
- 25% Uses appropriate instructional methods and materials, implements curriculum objectives, attends in‑service training, and continues professional growth through study and experimentation.
- 20% Establishes and implements positive classroom policies and procedures, provides guidance, counseling, and discipline, and makes referrals for support.
- 10% Engages with students, parents or guardians, and staff, maintaining open relationships to aid student achievement.
- 5% Establishes classroom goals and objectives in conformance with statutes, evaluates progress, and prepares reports for parents or guardians.
- 5% Collects and interprets data, providing reports for administrative purposes.
- 5% Directs activities of assigned non‑certificated personnel.
- 5% Attends all required staff meetings and participates in district or building activities for professional achievement.
- Serves on staff committees as required.
- Participates in activities to enhance personal and professional skills.
- Performs related tasks consistent with the scope and responsibility of the position.
Requires dealing with a wide range of student achievement and behavior, flexibility to meet immediate needs, multitasking, and prioritization. May experience frequent interruptions, occasional difficult students, and exposure to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students. Physical demands may include moving, standing, and demonstrating instructional techniques safely.

- Use of equipment, computers, machinery, tools, or software.
- Directing assistants.
- Possibility to administer first aid and CPR when required.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree; academic preparation and experience for teaching a diverse student population in an urban school system. Programs may require additional preparation or experience working with bilingual students, at‑risk students, and in multi‑level or open‑concept classrooms.
Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate; some positions may require first aid and CPR certification; some positions may require a valid Washington State driver’s license or a Class II driver’s license.
