description
The Estimator in this cross-functional role, will work closely with Engineering, Sales, Program Management, Production Control, Supply Chain, Spares Programs and Operations Leadership to develop accurate and competitive cost estimates for kits, parts, and labor hours. You will also support serial production review, make-part inputs, and continuous refinement of standard costs through data analysis and on-site observation.
Summary of Duties- Kit Budgets & Proposal Support – Collaborate with PE, PC2, Supply Chain, and Ops to develop detailed kit budgets (part costs, recurring hours). Provide input for Buy Parts to support ROM (Rough Order of Magnitude) and refined cost estimation. Validate and track proposal estimates through project lifecycle for accuracy and variance.
- Production Cost Review – Analyze actual production data against budgeted estimates to identify and recommend cost-saving opportunities. Provide feedback loops from serial production to enhance future estimate accuracy.
- Make-Part Estimation – Develop and input initial standard hours for fabricated (Make) parts in collaboration with engineering and manufacturing.
- Resource and Headcount Planning – Use data analytics on actual hours to refine standard labor estimates. Conduct work sampling and job observation to eliminate inefficiencies and support accurate standard cost planning.
- Spares Estimation Support – Provide ROM estimates for spare parts to enable quick turnaround when supplier data is incomplete.
- Purchased Part Validation – Support the oversight and validation of purchased part costs for accuracy and strategic sourcing decisions.
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline relevant to aerospace manufacturing, preferred.
Experience & Qualifications- 5+ years of experience in cost estimation, proposal development, manufacturing engineering, or production planning (preferably in aerospace).
- Practical knowledge or experience with composite materials, structural components, electrical assemblies, or related aerospace interior parts.
- Experience with products at all stages of their life cycles including development, production, and operations.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, supply chain dynamics, and standard costing methodologies.
- Strong data analytics skills with the ability to work with complex datasets while effectively summarizing, visualizing, and communicating estimate data.
- Ability to read and understand proposal documents like the request for proposal (RFP), scope of work (SOW), and relevant cost related documents provided by the customer.
- Proficiency in Excel and with ERP/MRP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, Infor, Syteline).
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate across engineering, procurement, and production teams.
- Previous experience in aerospace interior design, retrofit programs, or kit manufacturing.
- Exposure to Lean, Six Sigma, or continuous improvement methodologies.
- Strong background in estimating machined parts complete (aluminum, hard metals, sheet metal) including Outside Processing and Assembly.
