In the role of Substation Team Lead, you will lead key client relationships and oversee the execution of substation projects, ensuring quality, delivery, and profitability.
Responsibilities- Establish and maintain the Power Delivery relationship with one or more local, key clients, driving quality and delivery while providing technical leadership and identifying new opportunities.
- Supervise a local substation team of engineers and designers, overseeing workload, quality, utilization, team morale, training, and conducting annual performance reviews.
- Apply project management tools and techniques, including defining goals, contract types, risk, work breakdown structures, scope, schedule, budget, financial controls, and project closeout.
- Collaborate with substation team members regionally and nationally to balance staff workload, quality, utilization, morale, and training.
- Build a network of technical peers in other offices and leverage those relationships for work‑sharing opportunities.
- Coordinate with marketing and technical leadership for business development.
- Implement the HDR Quality Management Systems (QMS) requirements, processes, and procedures.
- Oversee non‑engineering components of projects, such as public involvement, environmental permitting, right of way acquisition, construction management, and other services.
- Work independently, mentoring and supervising Project Engineers, Engineers in Training, and/or junior design staff.
- Perform client management, project management, and/or technical support activities.
- Represent HDR in marketing and proposal development for new opportunities.
- Travel for business development and project execution as needed.
- Perform other duties as required.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or ability to obtain it.
- Experience with Primavera or Sure Trak software.
- Familiarity with Washington‑based utilities is desirable.
- Professional registration (P.E.) in Power preferred.
- Experience in substation physical/outdoor design, including yard layouts, plans, sections and details, grounding, lightning protection, control building arrangements, raceways, auxiliary AC/DC power systems, and bill of materials.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience.
- Professional registration, license or certification required for the role.
- Strong communication and listening skills.
- Ability to handle multiple assignments.
- Good leadership and organizational skills.
- Commitment to participating actively in an employee‑owned culture.
