Summary

King County Sheriff's Office is hiring a Lateral Deputy to serve as a full‑time patrol officer. Deputies receive a patrol vehicle, competitive pay, and a range of benefits. This position is open to all qualified former law‑enforcement officers who meet the requirements below.

Lateral Hiring Incentives
  • All laterals hired on or after 09/11/2025 receive 40 hours of vacation and 40 hours of sick time credited on the first day of employment.
  • Washington State laterals hired on or after 09/11/2025 may be eligible for a $40,000 signing bonus.
  • Other lateral candidates may receive $25,000, paid in two installments: $10,000 on the first paycheck and $15,000 after probation, with a three‑year commitment.

Responsibilities
  • Patrol a designated area, assist persons in trouble, and render public safety services.
  • Respond to calls, secure scenes, interview victims and witnesses, gather evidence, and complete incident and arrest reports.
  • Investigate family disputes, reports of child maltreatment, and complaints of social or behavioral problems; take appropriate action.
  • Complete administrative tasks such as report writing with accuracy and timeliness.
  • Testify in court, presenting facts and observations objectively and attesting to chain of custody.
  • Participate in community policing activities and serve as a community resource.
  • Perform related duties across administrative, investigative, and special operations units as required.
  • Work schedule is 24/7 with rotating ten‑hour shifts; typical schedule: four days on, three days off, four days on, four days off.
  • This position is open and continuously recruited.
Qualifications
  • Full‑time commissioned police officer with at least 12 months of active patrol after academy training.
  • Successful completion of probation as a commissioned officer with a city, county, state police, or sheriff's department.
  • Federal law‑enforcement experience may qualify, pending review by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center.
  • Less than a two‑year break in service from a former police officer position.
  • Academy training meeting or exceeding 720 hours of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center's standards.
  • Out‑of‑state applicants must complete an 80‑hour equivalency academy.
  • Verification of no contra‑indications with the Sheriff's Office Automatic Disqualifiers.
Background Investigation

Successful oral board candidates will complete a background packet within two weeks. The investigation, which typically lasts six weeks, includes review of driving records, criminal history, employment and military records, references, and a polygraph examination.
