General FunctionThe Dementia Day Program Assistant assists with planning and implementing 5-hour/day programs at VOA locations for adults with early-stage dementia. Named Old Friends Club, the program is an affiliate of a regional network of dementia day programs in the Puget Sound.
Principal Activities- Greet guests entering the Old Friend's Club.
- Maintain a welcoming and safe environment.
- Assist with planning, preparing and implementing activities.
- Help with planning and leading activities, which may include morning coffee, brain games, art, music, crafts, physical activity and more.
- Facilitate activities for guests.
- Work with Dementia Day Program Coordinator to prepare, serve and clean up lunch for guests.
- Assist with supporting volunteers.
- Ensure club space is clean and floors are swept daily.
- Keep supplies and supply closet organized.
- Other duties as assigned
This role supports a safe, engaging, and well-organized program environment that enhances quality of life for adults with early-stage dementia through meaningful socialization and activities. By effectively assisting with program delivery and daily operations, the Program Assistant helps ensure participants experience consistency, dignity, and positive engagement. The position also contributes to reliable respite for caregivers, strengthening overall program impact and community trust.
Qualifications- Minimum of one year working with individuals with dementia or other cognitive and/or physical disabilities.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Certified Nursing Assistant or equivalent experience is preferred.
- Experience leading activities, such as art, music, games, etc.
- Advanced communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm and patient under stressful conditions.
- Experience working with seniors is preferred.
- Pass a Washington State Patrol background check.
- CPR/1st Aid/AED certification within 60 days of hire.
- Food Handler's Permit (on-line) within 30 days of hire.
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand and walk for periods of time.
