Position: Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney I

Description

The Criminal Division is responsible for prosecuting all adult and juvenile felonies that occur within Snohomish County, as well as misdemeanor and gross misdemeanor cases in unincorporated areas. The Office is committed to exercising prosecutorial discretion in ways that best serve a diverse community, supporting crime victims, holding offenders accountable, and protecting the rights of the accused. Compensation

For a full‑time first‑year Criminal Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in 2025, total compensation averages $, which includes a gross annual salary of $92,076.00 and annual benefits valued at approximately $34,132.00. Benefits include medical, dental, vision, FICA, Medicare, Washington State Paid Family and Medical Leave, PERS, disability insurance, and a limited employer match for a deferred‑compensation plan. The position also covers state and local bar dues, Prosecutor‑sponsored CLEs, and may qualify for student‑loan forgiveness programs.

In 2026, the base salary increases 2.72% to $94,580.00.

First‑year employees receive 96 paid sick hours, 96 paid vacation hours, 16 floating holiday hours, 11 paid holidays, and yearly merit awards up to $4,000.

BASIC FUNCTION

Provide professional legal services to the Criminal Division. This entry‑level attorney class typically handles less complex criminal matters and progresses to greater independence as experience is gained.

Job Duties
  • Evaluate, charge, negotiate, and try criminal cases as assigned.
  • Establish and maintain effective relationships with attorneys, support staff, benches, bar, county government, law enforcement, and community partners.
  • Work effectively across division and departmental lines to achieve goals.
  • Assist others when requested or directed.
  • Prioritize justice while managing case costs and resource allocation, minimizing overhead, witness fees, and inconvenience to witnesses.

Minimum Qualifications

Legal degree from an accredited law school and membership in good standing with the Washington State Bar Association (or a Rule 9 license with ability to join the bar within a short period of hire).

Special Requirements

Must be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident, possess a valid Washington State driver’s license (may be required), and successfully pass a criminal background investigation including fingerprinting.

Knowledge And Abilities

Knowledge of the following: charging and disposition standards, judicial procedures and evidence law, basic appellate practices, office procedures, methods and equipment (including computers and software), legal research techniques, and rules of professional conduct.
