Position: Motor Pool Manager (Continuous 5/5/2026)

Overview

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Commissioner or designee, the Motor Pool Manager is responsible for performing supervisory and administrative work of a technical nature involving overall supervision of the maintenance, repair, and reconditioning of all types of department vehicles territory wide. Employee is responsible for directing shop operations, including work scheduling, staff assignment, evaluation, and discipline. Work is reviewed through conferences and reports on a periodic basis.

Responsibilities
  • Provide general supervision of the work of motor pool staff territorial by prioritizing work assignments, establishing deadlines, and reviewing work performed to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with established policies and procedures.
  • Interview and make recommendations to hire; perform subordinate mechanic evaluations; review and inspect work completed by subordinate mechanics.
  • Prepare estimates of time, parts, and materials needed to make repairs and order mechanical parts and equipment as needed.
  • Prepare various forms and log sheets of maintenance records for vehicle reports and compare invoices to records and processes for payment.
  • Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and calling for repairs.
  • Prepare and review documents related to time sheets, requests for leave, and overtime.
  • Participate in and oversee the cleaning and maintenance of the level of the parking garage used by the motor pool; oversee cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
  • Respond to employee questions, concerns, and problems; approve employee timesheets and leave requests.
  • Oversee the transport of vehicles to be serviced, garaged, picked-up and delivered, as required.
  • Develop and monitor unit work plans and work performance standards; monitor and provide for training needs; meet with employees individually and as a unit.
  • Perform administrative management tasks and prepare related management reports.
  • Assist in the formulation of administrative and operations policies and procedures and ensure compliance with administrative policies, procedures, safety rules and government regulations.
  • Provide technical guidance/assistance and make decisions where written guidelines are not available.
  • Prepare budget for the motor pool area and monitor all expenses.
  • May perform the task of an Auto Technician when necessary to maintain sufficient operation of the Motor pool area.
  • Perform all other related duties as required.
  • Completion of the twelfth (12) grade including or supplemented by vocational courses in automotive mechanics, and ten (10) years of experience performing a variety of skilled tasks in the repairs and maintenance of automotive and hydraulic equipment.
Qualifications

FACTOR 1- KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of automotive mechanics and heavy equipment repair.
  • Knowledge of tools, materials and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of automotive repair and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques of motor pool or automotive garage operation.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques of supervision.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in automotive mechanics.
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules and regulations governing motor vehicle inspection.
  • Ability to read, interpret and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities.
  • Ability to give oral instructions in a precise, understandable manner.
  • Ability to follow written instructions.
  • Ability to read and understand terminology, symbols, codes, and standard abbreviations used in automotive mechanics.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as equipment operating manuals, technical specifications, and maps.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency or changing program or production requirements.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
