Role highlights
Install and align main engines, gear boxes, pumps, shafts, jet drives, propellers, rudders, and Z-drives.
Fabricate steel and aluminum machinery foundations from blueprints; perform layout, MIG/arc welding, and tacking.
Conduct alignments and lock-down during sea trials.
Lay out, cut, form, machine, and prep parts for final assembly.
Operate lathes, mills, grinders, and drills; employ calipers, torque wrenches, micrometers, and dial indicators.
Verify tolerances meet owner specs and regulatory requirements.
Use both imperial and metric systems; convert SAE/metric and fractions/decimals.
Work with shears, brakes, rolls, presses, and band saws.
Handle oxygen–propane torches and plasma cutters.
Keep work spaces orderly; follow all safety policies and regulations.
Thrive independently or as part of a team; apply adaptability and problem-solving every day.
Communicate clearly in writing and speech.
Backfill Inside Machinists as needed for custom component builds and assemblies using conventional lathes, mills, and grinders per blueprint specifications.
Champion safe work practices and strong housekeeping; embody the NBB safety culture.
Share knowledge, mentor apprentices, and collaborate constructively with crew and supervision.
Jump in on additional tasks as they arise in a dynamic yard.
Must-haves5+ years as a Machinery Assembler or Journeyman Machinist.
High school diploma/GED or vocational education.
Shipyard safety and vessel terminology familiarity.
Blueprint and specification reading/interpretation skills.
Strong basic math and conversions (SAEmetric, fractions decimals).Hand/power tool proficiency; lathe and milling machine experience.
Comfort around heavy machinery; willingness to work overtime as needed.
Ability to lift/carry up to 50 lbs and work at heights up to 60 ft.
Capable of entering confined spaces with a respirator and working in tight, awkward positions.
Nice-to-haves
Shipyard or marine construction background (repair or new build).Laser alignment experience (Rotoline, Pinpoint).Shipyard Competent Person certification.
Multi-material experience (steel and aluminum).Working knowledge of NAVSEA standard items.
OSHA 10 certification.
Forklift and manlift certifications/experience.
Interest in stepping into future crew leadership roles.
