Picnics in the Park Summer Meals Programs Associate
The Vashon Food Bank manages and operates the island’s only free summer youth meals program, called Picnics in the Parks (PitP). Every summer, for the past 15 years, PitP serves thousands of lunches to island youth. The goal of the program is to provide nutritious meals and activities in two local parks over the summer months when students do not have access to school meals.
Lack of access to school meals over the summer months creates a financial burden for low-income families. Vashon Island has an approximately 10% poverty rate and the Vashon Food Bank serves more than 1900 residents, amounting to nearly 18% of the island’s population, on an annual basis. PitP provides a reliable, nutritious and fun family activity for any island residents who want to participate.
The Vashon Food Bank partners with Harvest Against Hunger through the Harvest VISTA program, which mobilizes Ameri Corps members to develop and strengthen community food security programs. As part of this effort, Ameri Corps Summer Associate program supports Harvest Against Hunger’s mission to cultivate, strengthen and connect food system partners to ensure healthy food for people in need.
