The Trust for the National Mall is a nonpartisan non‑profit organization established in Washington, D.C. in 2002. As the leading philanthropic partner of the National Park Service, we are dedicated to restoring, enriching, and preserving the National Mall.
Role OverviewThe Chief Development Officer will manage and grow the organization's principal and major gift fundraising efforts. You will play a lead role alongside the President and CEO in elevating individual, corporate, and foundation giving programs while building the Trust's long‑term infrastructure for successful fundraising.
This role requires an experienced fundraiser who thrives on closing significant gifts, understands how to nurture long‑term relationships, and leads with a sense of urgency. You will work directly with the President and CEO to identify and secure seven (7) and eight (8) figure leadership gifts. The successful candidate will guide strategy while effectively delegating responsibilities related to pipeline management, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
PrimaryResponsibilities
- Overall operating revenue and capital project fundraising strategies.
- Recruitment and closure of the most significant gifts to the Trust.
- Best‑in‑class build‑out of a long‑range fundraising program defined by excellence.
- Manage philanthropy team goals and results.
The Chief Development Officer reports to the President/CEO and will manage three (3) Director/Senior Director positions overseeing external, internal, and special events fundraising.
Key Skills- Expertise in principal‑level (7 and 8‑figure) fundraising with comfort working with sophisticated philanthropists.
- Exceptional capacity to delegate with expert‑level organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Passion for mentoring and empowering the development staff.
- Demonstrated success working alongside a motivated CEO.
- A competitive nature balanced with an empathetic, servant‑leader style.
- Bachelor's degree required or equivalent professional/military experience.
- At least 15 years of successful experience securing leadership gifts at the seven‑ and eight‑figure levels.
