Description:
This position involves caring for medically complex and critically ill patients. The patient population includes those with respiratory failure requiring noninvasive or mechanical ventilation. Responsibilities include managing patients post-central venous line placement, cardiac arrest recovery with targeted temperature management, and multisystem organ failure. Candidates should expect to care for patients with various shock states, CVA post-tPA, COVID-19, ARDS, DKA, and alcohol withdrawal.
The unit features one certified nursing assistant per shift to assist with patient care. It is a fast-paced environment where procedures such as bedside central and arterial line placements, chest tube placements, rapid sequence intubation, and thoracentesis are common. Standard nurse-to-patient ratios are 2:1, but can increase to 4:1 under certain conditions. Travelers may be required to float to other units based on census needs.
Candidates should be prepared for floating, although this is infrequent. The unit is staffed 24/7 and has support from interdisciplinary teams including physical therapy, respiratory services, and pharmacy. This role requires ongoing communication and collaboration with various healthcare professionals to provide the best patient care. A commitment to completing all required orientation and training prior to beginning the assignment is essential.
