Position: WCC Crew Supervisor - 1 - Olympic

Description

The Department of Ecology is hiring Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) Crew Supervisor 1 positions
. WCC is an environmental service program within the Shorelands and Environmental Assistance (SEA) Program.

This is a project position funded until June 30, 2027
.

Application Timeline: This is a continuous posting. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and will be entered into a candidate pool. Applications expire every 90 days; to remain in the pool you must reapply every 90 days.

Multiple Locations: The posting will fill vacancies in the Olympic region (Clallam, Jefferson, Grays Harbor, Kitsap, and Mason counties) and remains open continuously.

Only in-person, no telework: The position requires field work 40 hours per week and is not eligible for telework. Typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, 7:00am‑5:30pm. Alternative travel schedule may apply.

Duties

The supervisor leads a crew of five WCC members, mentoring and managing their performance while supervising natural resource assignments. Projects may include Habitat Enhancement (riparian restoration, noxious weed control, in-stream salmon recovery),
Recreational Enhancement (campground upgrades, trail construction, boardwalk installation), or Spike projects that travel the state.

Key responsibilities:

  • Recruit, interview, and select new crew members; plan and assign work tasks.
  • Support crew development, safety, well-being, and inclusion.
  • Evaluate performance, provide feedback, and create disciplinary or improvement recommendations.
  • Track and complete conservation projects; monitor resources, equipment, and safety.
  • Compile required paperwork: timesheets, travel logs, credit card receipts, safety and production reports, hiring and termination forms, and member evaluations.
  • Maintain state-owned or leased vehicles and equipment.
  • Work in challenging environments: inclement weather, rough terrain, wilderness, lifting up to 60 lb, overnight travel, and potential disaster response deployments.
Qualifications

Required:

  • Three (3) years of experience equivalent to WCC field work, young adult mentorship, or leadership (e.g., crew lead, outdoor leadership).
  • OR Satisfactory completion of a two-year Forest Technology Vocational Program and one (1) year of field experience as a WCC crew member or related hazardous response work.
  • OR Associate’s degree in Environmental Science or related field plus one (1) year of field experience.
  • Qualifying military experience may substitute, year for year, for field experience.

Special Requirements / Conditions of Employment:

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Background check, including criminal record history, will be conducted prior to hire.

Desired:

  • Experience in supervision and training of employees, natural resource conservation and maintenance, and use of hand and power tools.
  • Certification:
    Wilderness First Aid, Pesticide Operator, Wildland Firefighter Red Card.
  • FEMA Disaster Response Training:
    Intermediate Incident Command System (ICS 300) or Introduction to NIMS (IS‑700).
