WCC Crew Supervisor - Southwest

The Department of Ecology is hiring Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) Crew Supervisor 1 positions. WCC is an environmental service program within the Shorelands and Environmental Assistance (SEA) Program.

This is a project position funded until June 30, 2027. It is a continuous posting; applications are accepted on a rolling basis. While a vacancy may exist at the time of application, positions can open at any time.
To remain in the candidate pool you must re‑apply every 90 days.

Multiple Locations: Southwest region (Clark, Pierce, and Thurston counties). The region includes Vancouver, Olympia, Tacoma, and several national parks and state parks.

Only in‑person, no telework: The position requires on‑site field work 40 hours per week.

• Typical schedule:
  
  Monday–Thursday, 7:00 am–5:30 pm.
• Possible alternative schedule when traveling:
  Thursday–Thursday, 10‑hour days, with six days off prior.

This position supervises and mentors a crew of five WCC members on natural resource assignments.

Responsibilities include:

• Habitat Enhancement: riparian restoration, noxious weed control, in‑stream salmon recovery work, etc.
• Recreational Enhancement: campground upgrades and maintenance, trail construction and maintenance, boardwalk installation, etc.
• Spike Projects: crew travel across Washington for restoration and recreation projects; time on spike projects varies by crew and season (25‑75%).
• Lead crew deployments to local and national disasters as a nationally recognized disaster response program.

What you will do:

Crew Supervision:

• Support and guide crew members in career and education objectives.
• Recruit, interview, and select new crew members; assign and plan work tasks.
• Evaluate performance, provide feedback, document issues, and recommend disciplinary actions.

Project Management:

• Track and complete conservation projects; monitor materials, tools, and equipment.
• Communicate progress with project sponsor and WCC staff; assign tasks.
• Submit necessary paperwork (timesheets, travel logs, safety reports, production reports, administrative forms, hiring and termination forms, evaluations).
• Ensure safe use and maintenance of equipment and do‑vehicle maintenance.

Working Conditions:

• Inclement weather, rough terrain, wilderness areas; walking several miles per day; steep inclines; lifting up to 60 pounds repetitively.
• Possible overnight travel, consecutive days up to eight in travel status, work beyond 40 hours per week, and up to 30 consecutive days in disaster response.

Required Qualifications:

• Three (3) years of experience equivalent to WCC field work, youth mentorship, or outdoor leadership.
• OR completion of a two‑year Forest Technology Vocational Program plus one (1) year field experience as a WCC crew member or in emergency response, hazardous spills, firefighting, or habitat restoration.
• OR an associate’s degree in Environmental Science, Forestry, or a closely related field plus one (1) year field experience as a WCC crew member or in emergency response, hazardous spills, firefighting, or habitat restoration.

Qualifying military experience may substitute, year for year, for field experience.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

• Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
• Background check (criminal record) will be conducted; may be considered in employment suitability.

Desired

Qualifications:

• Experience in supervising and training employees, natural resource conservation and maintenance work, and use of hand and power tools.
• Field skill certifications (e.g., Wilderness First Aid, Pesticide Operators License, Wildland Firefighter Red Card).
• FEMA Disaster Response Training (Intermediate Incident Command System, Introduction to NIMS).
