Position: GENERAL INTEREST & TRADES APPRENTICE - ESR

Everett Ship Repair (ESR) is the Pacific Northwest’s premiere ship repair facility. Founded in 2019, ESR offers extensive ship repair, maintenance, and conversion services for commercial vessels, with a focus on commercial workboats and passenger vessels. With the U.S. Navy as a neighbor, ESR is actively pursuing Navy business as it expands its footprint and expertise. The company’s dry‑dock capacity and highly skilled team provide a progressive environment where tradesmen can learn and apply their skills.

Apprenticeship

Program

ESR sponsors approved state apprentice programs in Marine Pipe fitting, Marine Painting, Machinery Assembly, Production Welding, and Ship Fitting/Fabrication, including Electricians. The apprenticeship program develops a sustainable workforce of journey persons through on‑the‑job training, classroom instruction, and structured progression. Apprentices receive employment, education, and training with experienced journeymen and technical experts. Classroom curriculum meets Washington State Department of Labor & Industries requirements, typically consisting of about three hours per week.

Apprentices must maintain a minimum cumulative average of 80%; failure in any course results in removal from the program.

What You Will Do

Depending on the trade, apprentices will learn to build vessel structures, hull components, piping systems, machinery installations, and prepare surfaces for painting or welding. Specific functions will vary by trade but generally include:

  • Responsible for safe work practices and housekeeping procedures.
  • Work as a team member, adapting, interpreting, and solving problems.
  • Express ideas concisely and clearly, both orally and in writing.
  • Perform other tasks as directed.
Duties Once Admitted
  • Attend all classes and presentations regularly.
  • Demonstrate competence through practical exams and required classwork, achieving passing scores on tests.
  • Record and track on‑the‑job training (OJT) hours daily.
  • Have a journeyman or higher sign off on hours weekly.
  • Submit monthly hours tracking forms to supervisors.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 18 years of age or older.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.; work at heights of 60 ft.; enter confined spaces and work in small, angled spaces.
  • Basic mathematics proficiency.
  • Knowledge of basic hand and power tools.
  • Willingness to learn the trade and attend required training.
  • Experience using safe work practices.
  • Commitment to attend 144–216 hours of non‑regular classroom training per year without wage compensation.
  • Experience working around heavy machinery and equipment as part of a team.
  • Completion of craft‑related technical training or equivalent work experience.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to follow instructions.
  • Personal attributes: interest in the trade, commitment to self‑development, quality focus, and attention to detail.
  • Proof of U.S. person status.
  • Willingness to submit to a drug screen and background check.
  • No felony convictions related to theft, deception, drug crimes, or violent crimes.
  • Academic ability to succeed in the program.
  • Motivation to continuously improve knowledge and skills.
  • Integrity to complete all assigned academic work independently.
  • High reliability in task accomplishment and timekeeping.
