Rigger Journeyman – Prepare materials for transport by crane or forklift, determine rigging selection, ensure appropriate maintenance and rotation of rigging, and provide operators with proper hand signals and tag‑line assistance during lifts.

What You Will Do
  • Work with the Crane Operator to choose and attach lifting apparatus to material for transportation by crane or forklift.
  • Provide hand or radio signals to the crane operator to ensure the safe movement of materials during crane lifts.
  • Understand lift dynamics and various lift configurations for slings, straps, cable, chain, bracket, and plate clamps.
  • Display working knowledge of shackles, straps, cables, braces, brackets and other rigging tools lift capacities, required maintenance, and safety checks.
  • Safely operate forklifts up to 18 tons to transport materials to various departments and deliver needed materials to employees.
  • Control taglines for small and large lifts following directions of the Operator in charge.
  • Assist in stabilizing materials and vessels after transport with cribbing under the direction of the Operator in charge or Launch Crew Supervisor.
  • Use various hand and power tools in daily operations to assist in preparation of materials for transport or general clean up after transport.
  • Work as a member of a team demonstrating skills to effectively communicate, adapt, interpret and problem‑solve.
  • Always embrace safety culture and practice safe shipyard work practices and housekeeping.
  • Develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with fellow crew members and supervision.
  • Share your knowledge in the trade with other employees, especially those in learning or apprentice roles.
  • Other tasks as needed that may arise in our exciting work environment.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Experience operating forklifts
  • Ability to communicate in English
  • Knowledge of Crane Hand Signals
  • Ability to Control Taglines for Large and Small Lifts
  • Basic understanding and application of mathematics
  • Experience working around heavy machinery
  • Good verbal communication skills
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to pass company pre‑employment screens (background check, drug test, physical skills test)
Additional Things That Would Distinguish You
  • 3+ years experience rigging
  • Experience and knowledge of rigging and its application in the shipbuilding and repair industry
  • Experience and knowledge of critical lift planning
  • Interest in and aptitude for taking on future crew leadership roles
