Position: Electrician I - Lead

The Operations Section of King County’s Solid Waste Division (SWD) is inviting applications for a Career Service position. The Technical Expert will maintain and advance the specialized electronic systems that power our landfills, transfer stations, and support facilities, ensuring public safety, environmental protection, and infrastructure reliability.

About this Role

Serve as the technical expert for diagnosing, repairing, and enhancing a wide range of electronic systems used across Solid Waste Division facilities, including wastewater pumps, water pumps, and pump controls. Use advanced diagnostic tools and software to perform system evaluations, modify existing infrastructure, and document changes. Design and implement custom solutions, fabricate and install specialized components, and coordinate with electricians and other staff to ensure system reliability and safety.

Provide training, maintain detailed records, and support cross‑functional efforts to improve infrastructure performance and compliance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance and repairs on voltage systems, familiar with switch gear, ancillary equipment, and flare station components.
  • Troubleshoot electrical power, lighting, control, and equipment to determine causes of failure.
  • Repair damaged electrical equipment, panels, conduit, and conductors.
  • Install electrical systems in new construction and upgrade existing systems in compliance with applicable codes.
  • Evaluate existing equipment, provide recommendations for future needs and anticipate costs.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance, visual inspections, and cleaning of variable‑speed drives, motors, motor control centers, and programmable controllers.
  • Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair electronic digital communications control systems, fans, pumps, digital card readers, cameras, parking gates, motion sensors, and door monitoring systems.
  • Maintain power distribution systems, including lighting distribution, low‑voltage switching, power distribution panels, emergency generators, and heating‑related switches.
  • Perform troubleshooting, maintenance, or installation of blower systems and industrial flares.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • At least 3 years of experience diagnosing malfunctions, performing repairs, testing, and locating defective components in electronic systems.
  • Experience troubleshooting control PLCs, blowers, and pumps in heavy equipment environments.
  • Experience in an industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of federal, Washington State, and local electrical codes.
  • Skill in installing complete electrical systems.
  • Working knowledge of electrical tools, materials, and hand and power tools.
  • Ability to read blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical instrumentation and test equipment.
  • Knowledge of OSHA regulations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
Preferred Experience
  • Experience with solar pumps.
  • Experience with gas collection equipment electrical systems.
  • Experience with motor and pump control programming.
  • Journeyman electrician certification.
Required Licenses/Certifications
  • Valid Washington State driver’s license.
  • WA State Electrician (01) license.
Working Conditions
  • Worksite: SWD Maintenance Facility, 201 SW 34th Street, Renton, WA, with travel to other transfer stations.
  • Must reside in Washington state and be willing to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
  • Work in confined spaces and outdoors in all weather; high‑traffic maintenance facility with possible noise and dust.
  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs. at least once daily with or without assistance.
Work Schedule

40‑hour workweek, 5:30 am–2:30 pm Monday through Friday. Overtime eligible with supervisor approval. May include weekend work and alternative schedules to support core service hours. Essential employee status – expected to work during weather, health, or other emergency events. Division closed only on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.
