Position: Rail Maintenance Service Center Worker (CDL)

Overview

King County Metro Transit Rail Division is hiring dependable, detail‑oriented Rail Maintenance Service Center Workers. These workers communicate with multiple rail sections, including Sound Transit and King County Transit, for materials management projects, requisitioning parts, warranty administration, and creating Excel reports related to inventory and finance. They also maintain inventory, issue and receive parts, purchase items, manage stock levels, and open and close work orders.

Responsibilities
  • Purchase consumables and similar products via P‑card.
  • Process invoices and create requisitions using Oracle system.
  • Reconcile or track budgets related to purchase expenses.
  • Issue materials, supplies, and equipment; sort and stock items in designated areas.
  • Verify items received by description, PO number, manufacturer part number, and quantity; record receipt.
  • Conduct and record physical inventory of stock items regularly using cycle‑counting procedures.
  • Coordinate shipping and receiving of calibrated tools on return; ship defective parts to vendors for repair or overhaul.
  • Assist chiefs in researching MMIS and presenting findings to minimize discrepancies and maintain inventory integrity.
  • Practice first‑in, first‑out procedures when stocking new inventory.
  • Operate material‑handling equipment, including forklifts, electric pallet jack, and electric pallet stacker.
  • Use a van or box truck to pick up and deliver parts and perform driving duties, such as operating vehicles with GVW > 26,000 lb., transporting loads 500 lb.–14,000 lb., securing cargo, conducting vehicle inspections, checking weather conditions, and notifying lead/chief of maintenance or delivery issues.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Intermediate experience with materials management and purchasing of parts, materials, supplies, and equipment.
  • Knowledge and experience applying stocking and inventory control principles.
  • Knowledge of common parts, materials, equipment, and supplies.
  • Experience tracking and shipping/receiving warranty parts to manufacturers.
  • Experience with Maintenance Management Information Systems (MMIS) or similar electronic systems.
  • Experience effectively using MS Excel to create spreadsheets, formulas, and reports.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships; inclusive of diverse populations and occupations.
  • Familiarity with MS Suite applications such as Word, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
Desired Qualifications
  • Intermediate skills using Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Prior Metro Transit experience.
  • Valid Class A or B CDL.
Special Requirements
  • Pass drug and alcohol testing per U.S. Transportation regulations.
  • Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record (state license within 30 days if out of state).
  • Ability to operate forklifts (training provided).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a CDL license.
Training to Obtain Within 6 Months
  • Obtain Washington State Class A or B CDL with air‑brake endorsement; maintain acceptable driving record.
  • If lacking a full CDL, obtain a Washington State Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) in class A or B with air‑brake endorsement before conditional offer and obtain full CDL within six months.
  • Crane certification.
Physical Requirements

The job requires regular kneeling, bending, squatting, reaching above and below the waist, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying items up to 50 lb.; occasional lifting up to 100 lb. with assistance or material‑handling equipment.

Work Schedule

40 hour per week with two consecutive days off. May include non‑standard hours, evenings, weekends, and holidays. Overtime eligible and shift pay +5% for second shift, +7.5% for third shift.

Salary
  • Day Shift: $33.33 – $46.76/hr.
  • Second Shift: $35.00 – $49.10/hr.
  • Third Shift: $35.83 – $50.27/hr.
Work Location

Employees may report to Kent Warehouse (6851 S 190th St, Kent WA 98032), Rail Operations and Maintenance Facility Central (3407 Airport Way S, Seattle WA 98134), or OMF East (1925 120th Ave NE, Bellevue WA 98005). Locations may change.
