The Department of Music at The College of New Jersey welcomes applications for an Associate Director of Bands and Artist Teacher of Instrumental Performance. This is a full-time, clinical specialist position (non-tenure track). Teaching and academic‑advising responsibilities to include:
- Conduct TCNJ Concert Band and/or TCNJ Wind Orchestra.
- Serve as artist‑teacher (private lesson faculty) in the candidate’s area of expertise.
- Teach additional courses in the music education curriculum based on the candidate’s area of expertise and department needs. Possible courses might include conducting, instrumental literature, brass/woodwind/percussion methods courses, and student teaching supervision.
- Serve as the academic advisor for a cohort of music majors and/or minors.
The successful candidate will contribute to the growth of the Department of Music, in close collaboration with the Director of Bands. They will foster a high‑level performance and education environment in a diverse liberal arts context. Excellent oral, interpersonal, and writing skills are required. A clear understanding of current developments in secondary and post‑secondary education is essential. In order to be considered for promotion, service to the College is expected, with a prioritization of independent, departmental, and college‑wide recruitment.
Developing and maintaining contacts and sustained relationships with local and regional music educators is crucial.
Required:
- DMA in Conducting (instrumental emphasis); or terminal degree in music with appropriate artistic expertise and experience. (Candidates with ABD status effective by August 2026 will also be considered.)
- Extensive experience and accomplishment as an instrumental conductor‑educator at the secondary and collegiate‑levels (including as a graduate assistant)
- Proven record of high‑level artistry and performance on one’s primary instrument, with experience both in solo and ensemble settings, and private studio teaching experience at various levels.
- A record of visibility in the profession, with the ability to attract talented students to the College and support the stability of the Department.
- Experience with private lesson teaching and studio development at the collegiate level.
- Familiarity and experience with K-12 teaching and/or instrumental pedagogy.
- Familiarity and experience with athletic band instruction and development.
