Part‑Time Librarian 1 or Library Associate, Ewing Branch, Mercer County Library System

The Mercer County Library System is seeking a part‑time 19‑hour per week position in the Adult Reference Department at the Ewing Branch. This position requires two evenings per week as well as weekend hours. Other hours will be scheduled. The Ewing Branch is open on Sundays throughout the school year and on four county‑observed holidays; applicants must be available to work on some of those days.

Qualifications:

An MLS/MLIS degree from an accredited institution and a New Jersey Librarian’s Certification are required. Students enrolled in an MLS program who have completed a significant amount of coursework may also be considered.

Applicants should be enthusiastic, flexible, forward‑thinking, and passionate about adult services, with a keen interest in adult programming. Excellent customer service skills and the ability to serve a diverse community are essential. The candidate must be open to scheduling in‑person and virtual programming at convenient times, and should be willing to engage in outreach initiatives in the community and library system.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

• Computer proficiency, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher.
• Searching the library catalog and locating library materials.
• Accessing databases and other reference materials and showing patrons how to do so.
• Answering reference questions presented in person, electronically, and by telephone.
• Using computer, scanner, copier, and projector equipment.
• Providing reference and readers’ advisory services.
• Participation in weeding and collection development.
• Assisting patrons with the operation of computers and computer software.
• Participation in the library’s social media platforms, including submitting and creating content, writing posts for the MCLS blog, and being interviewed for the library’s podcast.
• Learning and using technology, such as the library’s automated system, online reference resources, eBook and audiobook platforms, and mobile applications.
• Participating in professional development opportunities to stay informed about current and emerging library services and technical developments.
• Available to participate in outreach events throughout the communities served by MCSL.

Prior experience with Sirsi Workflows library software and Library Aware is desirable.

Manual dexterity to handle and lift library materials, intermittent sitting, standing, walking, occasional bending, reaching, stooping, and pushing or pulling objects (e.g., book carts) is required.

The title is affiliated with AFSCME Local 3566. The salary range for part‑time Librarian 1 is $24.21 – $39.10 per hour. The salary range for part‑time Library Associate is $20.36 – $26.84 per hour.

There is a probationary period of 90 days.

The County of Mercer adheres to a residency requirement. Residents of Mercer County will be given first priority. Out‑of‑County residents will be expected to move into Mercer County within one year of employment. Applicants are subject to pre‑employment tests: drug, physical, and criminal background checks.
