Overview
Laboratory Manager at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). The primary goal is to support the experimental laboratories of the department and to assist in teaching and safety missions, including coordination, maintenance, and supervision of the stockroom infrastructure.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with the instrumentation specialist, laboratory coordinators, and other relevant faculty and support staff.
- Possibly perform curricular and programming responsibilities related to teaching and safety.
- Oversee the department’s main and satellite stockrooms, serving over 1,500 students annually across chemistry lab courses; prepare approximately 30–35 lab sections per fall and spring semesters.
- Manage a wide range of chemical inventory (2,600 primary containers, flammable solvents, pyrophoric metals, organic and inorganic compounds, peroxides, concentrated acids and bases) and hazardous materials in compliance with EHS protocols.
- Maintain the department’s chemical and physical assets (excluding major instruments, office equipment, and IT).
- Order, organize, and maintain all departmental chemicals and laboratory supplies for stockrooms, teaching laboratories, and research laboratories.
- Hire and supervise workers associated with stockroom functions.
- Maintain the department’s safety data sheet (SDS) library and digital inventory tracking system.
- Serve as an administrator of the Chemical Hygiene Plan; supervise chemical hygiene protocols and compliance with safety policies.
- Coordinate hazardous waste disposal with timely pickup, required documentation, and regulatory reporting.
- Procure and distribute laboratory consumables and PPE for faculty, staff, and student researchers.
- Support teaching laboratories, research labs, and shared instrumentation spaces across the department.
- Applicants must meet one of the following or a combination of both experience and education:
Thirty (30) semester hour credits equals one (1) year of relevant experience. - Six (6) years of professional experience in data processing, installation and maintenance of application programs, technical support, and/or design and preparation of programs.
- Possession of a bachelor's degree and two (2) years of the specified professional experience.
- Possession of a master's degree and one (1) year of the specified professional experience.
