Job Description
MPI Exeter is seeking experienced Machine Operators to join our Pipe Fabrication and Machining operation. The Machine Operators are responsible for measuring, threading, and adjusting flange fit and facing the flange on pieces of ductile or steel pipe. The position requires the use of all types of manual machine tools, such as lathes and threaders. Work also includes operating the machines and cranes to move pipe in and out of machining centers.
ScopeOf Responsibilities
- Ensuring personal safety and the safety of your team members.
- Assisting supervisors and managers in maintaining a safe and healthy work environment.
- Wearing appropriate PPE which may include fall protection, respiratory protection, hearing protection, foot, hand, head and eye protection.
- Maintaining cleanliness of the assigned work area.
- Proactively promoting the McWane Way principles.
- Following all processes and procedures associated with the Waterman Safety Management Program. Inform management of any deviations from this program.
- Identifying fabrication requirements for each piece of pipe.
- Operating forklift to move pipe inside/outside the plant.
- Operating pipe cut off saw.
- Placing pipe in machine, centering, and tightening for work. After the pipe is in place, the operator will machine tapered threads into the pipe and verify measurements (thread depth, taper accuracy).
- Testing the flange after threading to ensure it screws onto the pipe accurately.
- Applying glue to pipe and flange and using the machine to tighten the flange onto the pipe.
- For Threaders – removing pipe from machine and moving to the next processing operation.
- For Lathes – running the cutting tool across the surface of the flange to flush fit the flange onto the pipe.
- Work with pipe and flanges primarily from 3” to 24” diameter, and lengths from 6 inches to 18 feet.
- Maintain quality and meet prescribed production output objectives for the work center.
- Paint and package finished product.
- Read a tape measure and micrometer; perform basic math.
- Understand machinery processes; maintain consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Support across a variety of different machines as needed; demonstrate a positive, hard-working attitude.
- All other duties as assigned.
- Stand, walk, and use hands to handle objects and controls.
- Communicate verbally and in writing in English.
- Occasionally reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
- Lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; frequently up to 25 pounds; some tasks require up to 10 pounds.
- Meet physical requirements and wear PPE (steel-toed boots, safety glasses, hearing protection).
- Work in dust and fumes; tolerate loud noises; occasional overtime and extended hours.
- Operate forklift or overhead crane as required.
- Knowledge of industrial tools, their uses, and maintenance.
- Vision requirements include close, peripheral, depth perception, color distinction.
- Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.
- 1-3 years of experience in a similar role.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Experience as a machine operator in manufacturing preferred.
- Computer skills.
- Physical requirements include standing, walking, stooping, balancing, kneeling, reaching, and sitting.
- Must meet physical requirements and wear PPE (steel-toed boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, mask).
