Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Registered Practical Nurse is responsible and accountable for providing optimal care to promote the wellbeing of each individual resident.
Nature and Scope:Participates in the assessment, delivery and evaluation of nursing services to meet the individual needs of each resident.
QualificationsMust possess a current Certificate of Competence with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Must possess a medication administration certificate approved for Ontario since 1985 and added nursing skills training
- Prior experience in Long Term Care (Gerontology)
- Must have basic-advanced computer skills
- Must demonstrate an active interest in ongoing education
Available 7 days per week, Flexible hours
MainDuties and Responsibilities:
- Performs nursing skills in accordance with the standards of nursing practice as outlined by the College of Nurses
- Assists the Registered Nurse in contacting and facilitating medical services, other professional services, support services and external agencies to ensure continuity of care
- Ensure nursing staff perform assigned tasks and duties and reports observations to the Registered Nurse
- Performs delegated tasks safely and effectively
- Participates in interdisciplinary conferences for assessing, planning and evaluating resident care needs
- Works cooperatively with students and volunteers to enhance resident care and foster community partnerships
- Participates as required in the formulation and review of policies and procedures, goals and objectives
- Provides care to residents following an established plan of care
- Observes and reports resident health findings to the registered staff
- Completes resident records accurately to reflect the resident care provided complying with legislative and Home requirements
- Participates in the orientation process for residents, students, volunteers and nursing personnel
- Participates as required on various Home and departmental committees
- Works cooperatively with peers and supervisors using the CQI/Risk Management process to evaluate and ensure follow-up
- Uses supplies and equipment effectively and efficiently
- Shares responsibility for the care of the environment and equipment of the Home; and the personal belongings of the residents
- Promotes wellness as a concept of living
- Protects own health and health of others by adopting safe work practices, reporting unsafe conditions immediately and attending all relevant in-services regarding occupational health and safety
- Follows all roles and responsibilities for employees and employers as legislated under the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act
- Must actively participate in ongoing educational opportunities and relay information to the rest of the nursing staff
