Job Description

A welder at McWane Plant & Industrial in Exeter, CA is responsible for assembling, repairing, and joining metal components using various welding techniques while ensuring safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities & Qualifications
  • Reading and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings to understand product specifications and measurements.
  • Measuring, cutting, and shaping metal components using hand tools, plasma cutters, or metal cutting machines.
  • Performing welding operations using techniques such as MIG, TIG, Stick, and arc welding to join metal parts.
  • Setting up, maintaining, and operating welding equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Obtaining specified electrode and inserting it into a portable holder or threading consumable electrode wire through a portable welding gun.
  • Connecting cables from the welding unit to achieve specified amperage, voltage, slope, and pulse as directed by the Welding Engineer or Welding Technician.
  • Generating an arc that melts and deposits metal from the electrode to the workpiece to form a joint.
  • Guiding the electrode or gun along the weld line, maintaining arc length and movement speed to achieve the specified depth of fusion and bead.
  • Welding in flat, horizontal, vertical, or overhead positions.
  • Examining welds for bead size and other specifications.
  • Applying filler rod manually to supply weld metal.
  • Cleansing or degreasing weld joints or work pieces.
  • Repairing broken or cracked parts and filling holes.
  • Preparing broken parts for welding by grooving or scaring surfaces.
  • Chipping off excess weld, slag, and spatter.
  • Preheating work pieces with a hand torch or heating furnace.
  • Positioning and clamping work pieces together or assembling them in a jig or fixture.
  • Tacking assemblies together.
  • Performing other related duties as needed to meet project or organizational requirements.
Education and Experience

High school diploma or equivalent; vocational or technical training in welding is highly preferred. Continuous education and certification renewal are often required to keep up with evolving welding technologies and methods.

Certification, Licenses, Registrations

Professional credentials from recognized organizations such as the American Welding Society (AWS), including Certified Welder (CW) status.

Skills and Abilities

Hands‑on welding experience through previous jobs or apprenticeships; familiarity with different metals and welding techniques. Working knowledge of MIG welding equipment.

Language Proficiency

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to other team members.

Mathematics Ability

Ability to perform basic math skills, use decimals to compute ratios and percentages.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions and deal with problems involving a few variables.

Physical Demands

Required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; frequently lift and move up to 50 pounds; close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus are essential.

Work Environment

Exposure to moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, fumes, airborne particles, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibration; moderate to loud noise level; safety gear such as gloves, masks, and protective clothing is mandatory.

Hourly Pay Rate

$20‑$21
