Assistant Town Engineer

Pay Range:
Grade 13 (12-Step Scale) $84,228-$116,591

The Town of Exeter is currently seeking a full‑time Assistant Engineer for its Public Works department.

Providing technical and administrative support to the town engineer by maintaining engineering records, concise technical reports, and creating spreadsheets to track quantities and project management. Preparing plans, specifications and contract documents, and writing and managing Requests for Proposal/Qualifications (RFP) for consulting and engineering services. This includes holding pre‑proposal meetings, reviewing proposals, conducting interviews, selecting consultants, reviewing scope and fee contracts, and coordinating with funding agencies.

Inspecting construction of road, sidewalk, water, sewer and stormwater utilities; participating on the Technical Review Committee and reviewing plans for proposed subdivisions and developments; conducting site testing and field inspections for municipal projects; assisting with design and development of construction plans, specifications and bid documents; assisting in project management, construction administration, and site inspection for conformance with design specifications, approved plans and town standards.

Assisting with other engineering related duties as required, including permitting, correspondence, grant and funding applications and preparing permit and grant applications (wetlands, stormwater pollution prevention, stream crossing).

Knowledge and competency typically associated with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. 3–5 years of public works operations and municipal engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Registered as a professional engineer or able to register within one year of hire. Certifications in construction safety and confined space training. Valid driver’s license for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
