PRIMARY PURPOSE

Manage retail operations for the assigned department, making decisions that impact store associates, merchandise quality and presentation, and customer service. Build associate and customer relations and promote a strong culture that supports Hannaford Strategy through store huddles, role modeling, and consistent use of performance management tools. Ensure store conditions—including appearance, security, safety, and food safety—are maintained at the highest level and be accountable for the proper control of company assets.

DUTIES

AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Foster a positive and inclusive environment to retain associates and customers.
  • Ensure that all quality standards are met.
  • Manage department operations in accordance with established department standard practices.
  • Maintain the department’s appearance and presentation.
  • Hire, train and develop associates to meet departmental needs.
  • Attain departmental financial objectives.
  • Supervise the performance of all department associates.
  • Role model outstanding friendly customer service.
  • Delegate, assign, and follow up to ensure efficient department performance.
  • Maintain accurate records of production, shrink, sales, and inventory.
  • Provide recognition of accomplishments and offer constructive counseling when necessary.
  • Treat all co‑workers with fairness, dignity, and respect.
  • Ensure associates are trained by certified trainers.
  • Enforce all company policies and procedures.
  • Develop product knowledge for all areas of the assigned department.
  • Use RF (Radio Frequency) unit as needed.
  • Retrieve and organize assigned department product loads.
  • Order and maintain inventory to maximize sales and limit shrink.
  • Conduct performance appraisals as per company standards.
  • Maintain effective work schedules to meet production and customer service standards.
  • Use company tools such as MPP, financial reports, scheduling, ordering, and business information systems.
  • Apply merchandising standard practices to maximize profitability, focusing on priority categories.
  • Maintain solid communication within the department and across the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with sanitation, safety, and food safety standards.
  • Identify causes of shrink and implement solutions.
  • Understand department standard practice manuals and program manuals.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Demonstrate strong understanding of store operations and merchandising techniques.
  • Show excellent interpersonal, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Organize multiple tasks and technical requirements efficiently.
  • Apply good judgment in problem solving, decision making, and conflict resolution.
  • Lead and manage associates across multiple departments.
  • Have Department Manager or equivalent experience.
  • College degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Be accredited by the National Registry of Food Safety Professionals or similar, or be able to achieve accreditation within the first 90 days.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Use computers and communication systems to perform job functions.
  • Lift up to 20 lbs. regularly, including overhead lifting and up to 60 lbs. occasionally; push/pull up to 40 lbs. regularly.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  • Assist in attaining financial objectives: sales, payroll percent, gross margin, shrink, MPP net percent effectiveness, and control of other expenses.
