Position Summary

Carpenter, under the direct supervision of the Director of Facilities or designee, is responsible for performing skilled tasks related to the construction, renovation, maintenance, and repair of buildings and other structures within school facilities. This role ensures all building components are safe, functional, and aesthetically pleasing to support an optimal learning environment. The carpenter’s role requires collaboration with a team to ensure projects are completed safely, on time, and to specifications.

Duties
  • Provide regular updates on project status, work progress, and assigned tasks to the Director of Facilities or designee.
  • Perform skilled carpentry work related to the construction, renovation, maintenance, and repair of school buildings and facilities, including framing, drywall installation, finishing, and trim work.
  • Design, fabricate, and install custom‑built fixtures and specialized items to meet the operational and instructional needs of the district.
  • Construct, install, inspect, maintain, and repair cabinetry, furniture, playground equipment, doors, windows, flooring, ceilings, and other wood or metal building components, ensuring quality craftsmanship and proper fit.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Facilities or designee in coordinating and monitoring third‑party contractors to ensure projects are completed in accordance with district standards, specifications, and timelines.
  • Safely operate, maintain, and care for a variety of hand tools, power tools, and carpentry equipment in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Read, interpret, and apply blueprints, construction drawings, plans, and specifications to accurately complete assigned projects.
  • Prepare work sites by performing tasks such as measuring, layout, grading, excavation, material staging, and debris removal to support construction and renovation activities.
  • Work collaboratively with maintenance personnel and other skilled trades, including electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, and painters, to complete multi‑trade projects efficiently.
  • Monitor inventory levels of carpentry materials, supplies, and equipment; recommend and requisition additional materials as needed to support ongoing operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of work orders, preventative maintenance activities, completed projects, labor, and materials used.
  • Ensure all work complies with applicable building codes, safety regulations, district policies, and industry standards while promoting a safe working environment.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and secure job sites, equipment, and work areas to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Respond to emergency maintenance requests and perform urgent repairs to minimize disruptions to district operations and maintain safe, functional facilities.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support the Facilities Department and district operations.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge or familiarity with OSHA standards and handling of hazardous materials (MSDS).
  • Ability to follow oral or written work orders from the supervisor and coordinate work with the school principal and others.
  • Highly proficient in using carpentry tools, machinery, and software.
  • Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and codes.
  • Ability to read blueprints and technical drawings.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and work in varying environmental conditions.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Skilled in efficiently prioritizing tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Skilled in troubleshooting repairs or maintenance challenges.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Ability to describe orally or in writing cleaning, maintenance, or repair problems as needed.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others contacted in the course of work.

  • Ability to work in poor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and snow.
