Bridge Inspection Assistant, Structural Engineer
WSP is seeking a Bridge Inspection Assistant, Structural Engineer to join our Bridge & Infrastructure Inspection Team in Pennsylvania (Exton, Ephrata, Mechanicsburg). This position is an exciting opportunity for individuals new to bridge inspection who are interested in developing leadership skills.
Your Impact- Collaborate on inspection-related projects.
- Assist as an Assistant Team Leader for bridge, tunnel and ancillary inspections.
- Perform professional structural engineering work and inspections.
- Help prepare bridge and tunnel load ratings.
- Assist in developing plans and sketches using AutoCAD/Micro Station.
- Work with cross‑functional teams.
- Provide guidance and training to entry‑level engineers.
- Support engineering tasks to develop technical, social, and ethical skills.
- Conduct project research, field work, and preliminary design calculations and analysis.
- Support preparation of cost proposals and scope of work documents.
- Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
- Complete training for specific assignments.
- Stay current on latest structural engineering techniques.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company resources and conduct, complying with WSP’s Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or equivalent.
- 3–5 years of experience in bridge, tunnel, or ancillary inspection or design or other infrastructure‑related work.
- Engineer in Training certification.
- Proficient knowledge of structural engineering principles and practices.
- Demonstrated interest in structures, transportation, or related field with a strong desire to advance skills.
- Physically capable of continuous field work, including at heights, in close quarters, and in adverse weather.
- This position has the potential to work 50 % of the time in the field and 50 % in the office.
- Successful completion of a Motor Vehicle Record check and a valid Driver’s License is required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to express ideas clearly to engineering and non‑engineering audiences.
- Ability to work independently and provide guidance and leadership to junior team or project members.
- Advanced proficiency with technical writing, office automation, spreadsheets, and related software.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) required.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to comply with WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
- Flexible schedule to meet project‑specific requirements beyond the typical workweek.
- Occasional travel, potentially including overnight stays.
- Nationally Certified Bridge Inspector (NCBI) certification with current FHWA‑approved comprehensive bridge inspection training.
- Certified Bridge Safety Inspector (CBSI) through PennDOT, with current certification.
- Successful completion of the NHI Non‑Redundant Steel Tension Members (NSTM) course.
- Advanced knowledge of AutoCAD/Micro Station.
- Active membership or participation in local professional practice organizations.
