Position Title
Social Studies Teacher (Grades 5-8)
SummaryUnder the general supervision of the School Director, to facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities/outcomes; addressing specific educational needs of individual students and creating a flexible, safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc.
CompensationBase Salary-Certified-$73,500, (Adv. Degrees $3,000 for masters, $5,000 for doctorate). $200/ year for applicable experience.
Qualifications- Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required. (Masters preferred)
- Valid New York Instructional Certificate and Subject Area Endorsement or eligibility
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary
- Demonstrate working knowledge of the use of various technological software and equipment for tasks such as, but not limited to, word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual presentations, and telecommunications.
- Understand the requirement to maintain confidentiality concerning charter school-related matters.
- Knowledge of child growth and development, individual differences in ability, personality and interests and learning/motivational techniques.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Knowledge of current teaching methods and educational pedagogy, as well as differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles.
- Knowledge of grade specific school curriculum and concepts, including all subject matters taught.
- Knowledge of Smart board functions and tools.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation with regard to performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others contacted in the course of work; parents, students, faculty, etc.
- Prior to employment, the following must be addressed:
- Required to complete a criminal history background check to prove that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly person's offense.

The Social Studies Teacher Will
- Develops and administers curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Promotes a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small group instruction, and student learning.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and translates lesson plans into learning experiences so as to best utilize the available time for instruction.
- Conducts ongoing assessment of student learning, and modifies instructional methods to fit individual student's needs, including students with special needs; conducts individual small group instruction as needed.
- Conducts instruction with the principles of responsible citizenship and other subject matters specified in applicable laws, as well as administrative regulations and procedures.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research.
- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping, grading, and reporting for all student activities, achievement and attendance as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Ensures that student conduct conforms with school standards, school district policies, and establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
