The City of Seward is recruiting for a Seasonal Library Museum Aide
This position provides staff support services and Library and Museum front desk services for the daily operations, special events and programs of the Library Museum. Benefits only include Workers Comp. No other benefits provided.
DETAILED WORK DUTIES:- Provides staff support as directed, including archival tasks, processing of Library materials, and relocating materials and artifacts.
- Sorts and shelves Library materials daily, empties book depository, reads, and straightens shelves according to Dewey Decimal Classification system.
- Provides customer service as needed, responds to inquiries, or directs request to appropriate Library Museum personnel, takes admission fees, answers questions about exhibits and the City of Seward.
- Performs clerical duties, answers phones, contacts patrons as needed, responds to emails sent to the Library and Museum, schedules room reservations.
- Prepares notification of overdue materials to patrons as directed.
- Disseminates newsletters, program and closure or change of hour flyers.
- Assists supervisory staff with the development and operations of community programs, including room set-up, greeting participants, monitoring use of facilities and clean‑up as directed.
- Assists with collection management projects, including periodical processing as directed.
- May supervise and interact directly with participants and volunteers in Library and Museum settings, and during programs and activities.
- Completes specific projects as instructed, including sorting, reorganizing, and cleaning collections.
- Assists with program evaluations and record‑keeping.
- Maintains order and cleanliness of Library and Museum by straightening, dusting, adjusting and light surface cleaning as needed and directed.
- Supports and assists interns, volunteers, and community service workers.
- Maintains confidentiality of all Library and Museum records in accordance with State law.
- Provides effective and efficient customer service and promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
- Implements Library and Museum accounting practices and procedures as directed.
- Implements opening and closing procedures as directed.
- Follows safe work practices.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, 6 months of customer service experience in library, museum, or retail setting preferred, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills and ability:
- Library Museum policies and procedures.
- The Dewey Decimal System.
- The use of office equipment including computers and relevant software programs
- Oral and written communications.
- Customer service.
- Troubleshooting and problem solving
- Read and interpret basic instructions and safety rules.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors and Library Museum patrons.
- Apply basic mathematical skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
- Solve practical problems and seek assistance when needed.
- Multi‑task and prioritize work.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, Library Museum patrons, and the general public.

Hand‑eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, and hear; use hands and fingers to handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
The employee is occasionally required to kneel, bend, and crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 20 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds.
Work is performed mostly in an office/Library setting
