The Library Aide II position builds upon the responsibilities of the Library Aide I role, incorporating additional professional competencies developed through education and training. These competencies expand on the foundational skills and knowledge of a Library Aide I and enables the Library Aide II to perform more specialized tasks and duties. Each level in the hierarchy—Library Aide I, Library Aide II, Library Aide III, and Librarian—requires mastery of the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the preceding levels.

A Library Aide II is expected to perform all tasks and responsibilities of the Library Aide I position with a high degree of accuracy, initiative, and professionalism, while also demonstrating advanced capabilities specific to their role. All work must be conducted in a manner that reflects positively on the city and the Library, ensuring exceptional service and operational efficiency.

The following duties are essential for this position. However, they are not to be construed as exclusive or all–inclusive. To be successful in this position, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may also be required or assigned.

  • Checks out library items to library customers. Checks in returned library items.
  • Answers most reference questions and refers unresolved inquiries to the appropriate staff member.
  • Ordering and maintaining office supplies.
  • Mending library materials.
  • Processing item hold requests.
  • Processing and preparing new library items for circulation.
  • Maintains Periodicals, newspapers, and government documents in the library.
  • Organizes the public bulletin board, ensuring forms kept nearby are stocked for public use (public assistance forms, healthcare forms, tax forms, etc.); assists patrons with obtaining online information.
  • Opening and closing procedures preparing the library for daily public access.
  • Assists patrons with completing Interlibrary Loan request forms and applies basic knowledge of Interlibrary Loan policies and procedures.
  • Supports presentations, events, and instruction by assisting with the setup of library programming, events, and displays.
  • Composes effective reports, memos, letters, and emails to support library activities.
  • Runs standard library reports, views and prints them from the library automation system, and handles circulation tasks such as searching for long-overdue items and sending notices to patrons regularly.
  • Performs acquisitions, cataloging, and processing tasks, including basic copy cataloging, minor edits to bibliographic and holdings records under supervision, modifying serial holdings, adding item records to existing serials, and processing purchased materials as appropriate.
  • Provides basic technology troubleshooting for computer components and peripherals, assisting patrons with file downloads, and performing intermediate tasks in Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel, including creating and sharing calendars, scheduling meetings, and converting files to PDF.
  • Assists the children's librarian with increased programming and patron activities during the summertime.
  • Trains and monitors new employees and volunteers, teaching basic skills, evaluating comprehension, and directing performance or training-related questions to the supervising Librarian.
  • Exercises discretion in solving work-related problems and completes tasks with limited supervision.
  • Applies excellent customer service skills to enhance user satisfaction by managing the library environment, addressing difficult situations effectively, and ensuring high-quality service delivery.
  • Communicates effectively using diverse methods and approaches tailored to various audiences and individuals from diverse backgrounds to meet situational needs.
  • Collaborates with others to achieve common goals, working effectively in a team, and building strong relationships.
  • Understands and acts in accordance with the ethics and core values of library service, ensuring professional and respectful behavior at all times.
