ResponsibilitiesStep into a role that helps shape the future of Alaska’s communities. Under the guidance of the Program Management Chief, this position serves as a key grants coordinator within the Program Management and Administration Division.
As a Transportation Planner 1 you will help maximize federal funding coming into Alaska and support communities statewide as they pursue both federal and state funding opportunities.
You will work closely with internal teams and external partners to coordinate the department’s response to federal grant opportunities, elevate Alaska’s competitiveness, and ensure communities understand the department’s available state‑funded programs.
You will also take an active role in preparing and submitting federal grant applications (including through Grants.gov) and assist in developing and managing competitive state‑funded programs designed to support vital projects across Alaskan communities.
In this role, you will collaborate across agencies, coordinate with stakeholders, and support projects that advance Alaska’s transportation infrastructure.

Working EnvironmentPositions are located in Juneau, Anchorage or Fairbanks, Alaska, with potential for in‑state teleworking after training and supervisor approval. Qualifications- Grants Management – Knowledge of requirements, practices, and procedures for soliciting, receiving, reviewing, and processing proposals, and awarding and administering grants and agreements.
- Partnering – Develops networks and builds alliances; collaborates across boundaries to build strategic relationships and achieve common goals.
- Planning and Evaluating – Organizes work, sets priorities, determines resource requirements, establishes short‑ or long‑term goals and strategies, coordinates with organizations, monitors progress, and evaluates outcomes.
- Budget Administration – Knowledge of principles and practices of budget administration and analysis; preparing, justifying, reporting on, and executing the budget and related accounting systems.
- External Awareness – Keeps up‑to‑date on local, national, and international policies and trends affecting the organization.
- Landscape Architecture – Knowledge of planning, designing, construction and adaptation of outdoor features with consideration of recreation, aesthetics, and compatibility with other developments.
- Transportation – Knowledge of principles and methods for moving people or goods by air, rail, sea, or road, including costs and limits.
- Transportation Engineering – Knowledge of concepts, principles, theories, and methods applicable to planning, designing, and constructing transportation systems, including traffic analysis, signal analysis, highway capacity, pavement design, bridge construction, and environmental analysis.
Equivalent to those typically gained by post‑secondary education in urban, regional, transportation, or landscape planning, or by experience involving design of research projects, setting standards for technical adequacy, coordinating planning contributions of lower level planners or other agencies, or in related fields such as architecture, civil engineering, landscape architecture, urban design, historic preservation, geography, GIS, housing administration, grant administration, accounting, business management, or research.
