Assists in the care and tutoring of students who may have physical, social-emotional, behavioral, self-help and/or developmental deficits. This position may be placed in Intensive Resource (IR) or Extended Resource (ER) secondary special education classrooms, depending on District and building needs.
Compensation & BenefitsNew Hire Hourly Rate:
Grade 7: $23.15 - $25.90 DOE
Internal Hourly Rate:
Determined by the ESSA Negotiated Agreement.
Work Day: 3.5 or 7 hours
Work Year: 9 months
Bargaining Unit:
Education Support Staff Association (ESSA)
New hire bonus: $2,000 after first 30 days of employment.
Retention bonus: $2,000 payable in June upon successful completion of the current school year (prorated for part-time employees).

- Must meet at least one of the following:
- A high school diploma, or equivalent, and have completed the Para Professional Assessment, or have the ability to pass the assessment within four (4) months of hire;
- An associate's degree or higher;
- Completion of two years of higher education (at least 48 semester hours) or the equivalent.
- Must have an understanding of developmental disabilities.
- Must demonstrate proper lifting skills to safely lift a minimum of 50 lbs. regularly.
- Must have empathy for special needs of disabled children and be able to communicate respectfully and appropriately with physically and mentally disabled students.
- Successful completion of de-escalation training required within the first six (6) months of employment.
- Knowledge of basic reading, math, and curricular areas appropriate for age-level of students.
- Must possess ability to communicate clearly and consistently with students, staff, and parents, including calming upset or angry students, defusing conflict, and safely restraining out-of-control students who pose a danger.
- Must be able to remain outside for 30 minutes at 20 degrees below zero.
- Must have a valid driver's license and use of a personal vehicle.
- If the posted vacancy lists a requirement for signing skills, the applicant must have completed ASL I and ASL II.
