Position Overview
Provide a variety of library services and programs for children and young adults.
- Assist patrons in the effective use of library resources, including the online catalog and library materials.
- Plan, prepare, and present programs and provide services for patrons including story hours for pre-school children, summer reading program activities, school tours, and recommend library materials and resources for children and young adults.
- Preview new children's materials and maintain currency with children's literature.
- Create displays and lists of materials and resources relevant to children.
- Create, prepare, and perform public performances and attend outreach events for children and families.
- Create promotional materials and submit publicity to the media for events and programs; update library calendar of events, library social media accounts, and the library website with program information.
- Recruit outside agencies to present at special library events and programs.
- Compile monthly statistics of activities.
- Assist with animal care.
- Direct workflow of temporary, seasonal, and volunteer staff; resolve minor and occasional major problems with minimal supervision.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- One year of library experience, or one year of experience overseeing a classroom, or working in early childhood or school-aged programs. An associate degree in childhood development can also substitute for experience.
- Two years’ experience working with children in a structured environment.
- Experience with personal computers, MS Word, Excel, Desktop publishing tools.
- Experience with computerized library systems.
- Ability to have and maintain a valid driver’s license and to meet insurance standards and maintain insurability under the Borough’s insurance program. If a personal automobile is used for Borough business, proof of insurance at statutory limits must be provided. A current copy of driving record will be required upon request.
- Demonstrated knowledge of classic and current children's literature.
- Knowledge and experience in the use of office equipment such as copiers, scanners, fax, multi-function phone, printers, etc.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to perform in front of groups of all sizes.
- Ability to create promotional materials.
- A skills test may be administered to all qualified candidates.
- This position requires a criminal background investigation and fingerprinting.
General office with pleasant, clean conditions where accidents/hazards are negligible; requires short periods of moderate lifting, pushing or pulling (26-50 lbs.).
