Part-time and full-time opportunities are available statewide, and no prior experience in STEM or childhood development is necessary to apply! In addition to professional development, networking opportunities, and experience working in the education field, STEM Coaches receive a stipend and an education scholarship for their hours of service.
The mission of the Alaska After school Network is to support and strengthen after school programs that serve children, youth, and families throughout Alaska. Research shows that after school programs increase student attendance, grades, and graduation rates; decrease expulsions; increase self-esteem, causing a reduction in suicide; and build the protective factors needed for children to overcome trauma. The Alaska After school Network Ameri Corps Program contributes to the mission by placing members at after school or summer programs in Alaska, where they serve as STEM Coaches for K-5 youth.
STEM Coaches provide academic STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) and SEL (social emotional learning) learning to K-5 youth.
STEM Coaches will offer educational enrichment opportunities at their program site a minimum of 4 days per week, approximately 37 hours per week. They will offer STEM activities at their program at least once a week, Hours will include planning, preparation, and cleanup for each after school activity. STEM coaches will participate in program quality improvement, aided by training and coaching from Alaska After school Network staff.
They will track youth attendance and administer surveys to measure student engagement and program effectiveness in ensuring student success. Finally, STEM Coaches participate in professional development and training in child and youth care, positive youth development, high-quality program facilitation strategies, and diversity, equity, and inclusion in STEM.
