The Alaska Earthquake Center, part of the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, is hiring a Field Engineer. The role focuses on maintaining and improving the state’s 250‑station remote seismic monitoring network, overseeing power, communication, instrumentation, and infrastructure across Alaska’s remote locations.
Responsibilities- Develop and maintain reliable power and wireless communication systems for remote monitoring stations.
- Install, calibrate, troubleshoot, and replace scientific equipment (seismic, GNSS, meteorological sensors) and solar power systems.
- Manage a small field team (2–3 people), coordinating travel by helicopter or small aircraft, and working outdoors in remote settings for extended periods.
- Document field operations, ensure safety protocols, and support real‑time seismic data acquisition.
- M.S. in engineering or related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- At least 2 years of research or field experience relevant to geoscience instrumentation, logistics, or engineering.
- Strong problem‑solving skills, ability to work collaboratively and willingness to travel frequently to remote locations.
- Comfortable working outdoors in challenging environments (cold, remote, limited amenities).
- Physically fit to operate heavy equipment and handle field operations in Alaska’s conditions.
- Full‑time, term‑funded, exempt, 12‑month position with competitive salary and UAF employee benefits.
- Physical location: UAF campus in Fairbanks, Alaska; full‑time, in‑person staff.
- Position will be reviewed annually for contract renewal.
