Utility Engineer
Fairbanks Sewer and Water has an opportunity for a Utility Engineer
. Responsible for planning, design, and construction administration of water and wastewater utility projects as well as providing technical support for Operations as needed. Also responsible for utility asset (plant and piping) management program and related systems under the supervision of the VP of Engineering. Estimated 50% split between engineering/construction support and asset management duties.
Position will be based in Fairbanks, AK. Schedule Monday through Friday. After-hour and weekend on-call support may be required.

- Provide timely engineering support to internal and external customers.
- Support the utility asset management program.
- Ensure safe work practices at all times.
- Project management including evaluation of design, workmanship, and cost control. Prepare engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates. Select and specify materials and equipment. Plan for review updates to construction standards.
- Perform basic engineering analysis of piping and hydraulic systems, and water/wastewater treatment process.
- Conduct field inspections and troubleshoot construction project issues on site.
- Respond to requests for technical assistance from operations.
- Support administration of the CMMS (computerized maintenance management system) including asset additions and associated tasks, system improvements, and optimizations, PM generation and reporting.
- Maintain the Capital Equipment/Asset Repair & Replacement database.
- Support internal GIS database updates and maintenance.
- Minimum of two years of field and office experience in a water and wastewater utility or other industrial environment.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering.
- Valid AK Driver's License.
- Project management experience.
- Professional Engineering (P.E.) licensure.
- Strong commitment to safety.
- Strong understanding of fundamental engineering principles and techniques.
- Result-focused, detail-oriented, customer-centric and self-motivated individual.
- Good verbal and written communication ability; ability to communicate technical information succinctly and accurately.
- Good interpersonal skills; able to communicate with the public in a tactful, courteous manner.
- Experience in design and completion of projects, and demonstrated ability to exercise good engineering judgement.
- Ability to read and understand engineering plans and specifications.
- Ability to prepare engineering plans, specifications, and reports.
- Required computer skills:
Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Outlook, and ability to learn other software required for internal business processes. - Ability to learn and understand GIS applications and data.
- Preferred program experience:
Autodesk suite, Bentley WaterGEMS. - Maintain valid State of Alaska driver's license throughout employment.
- Approximately 50% of time in office with remaining time in the field, including plant and outdoor environments.
- In the field, exposure to loud noise, wastewater odors, chemical hazards, confined spaces, potential electrical hazards and hazards found on active construction sites may be encountered. Occasional extreme cold or hot conditions.
- Must have ability to perform physical duties such as occasional lifting up to 50 lbs unassisted, walking, sitting for extended periods, occasionally climbing, pulling, kneeling, twisting, turning, stooping, reaching, bending.
- Must wear/all personal protective equipment and adhere to safe work practices as appropriate for the work environment and as directed by the site supervisor.
