Engineering Associate; PCN

Position Overview

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Highways and Aviation is hiring an Engineering Associate in Fairbanks, Alaska. The role supports the Regional Maintenance Engineer in developing and managing maintenance programs, coordinating materials and contracts, and providing engineering support throughout the region.

• Collaborate with the Regional Maintenance Engineer to develop the region’s preventive maintenance (PM) program and maintain auditable records of completed work.
• Work with M&O forces to develop procedures and processes that ensure accurate construction records and support informed decision‑making for future projects.
• Administer the Aggregate Stockpiling Program, understanding material site resources and site‑specific requirements; manage new production contracts and secure necessary permits, mining plans, and documentation.
• Assist in managing contracts (as‑needed and other types) in support of M&O operations, using AASHTOWare for supply and construction contract administration.
• Provide engineering and program support to M&O staff throughout , including assistance with engineering, funding, regulatory, environmental, and other requirements.
• Support emergency response and recovery efforts by responding to and helping manage repairs when DOT infrastructure is damaged by fires, floods, earthquakes, or other natural disasters.

This position is based at the DOT&PF complex on Peger Road in Fairbanks. The role requires collaboration in the office, field, and across Microsoft Teams, with intermittent travel by small plane or boat. Candidates should thrive in a fast‑paced, dynamic setting and be comfortable with a variety of tasks.

• Civil Engineering: Knowledge of concepts, principles, theories, and methods for planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance of public works such as transportation systems.
• Problem Solving: Ability to identify problems, evaluate information, generate alternatives, and make recommendations.
• Project Management: Familiarity with planning, scheduling, coordinating, and monitoring projects, costs, work, and contractor performance.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Eight years of progressively responsible experience in engineering, land surveying, or architecture, or equivalent education (e.g., ABET accredited degree or courses). One year must have been served as an Engineering Assistant 3 with the State of Alaska, or an equivalent.
