Assist the Department Manager in planning, organizing, staffing, training and directing Grocery Department associates; perform production and customer service functions; maximize store sales and profits safely and ethically in accordance with policies and procedures.
Location:
Portland, Oregon.
- Assist the Department Manager in organizing work, filling department staffing needs, and training and scheduling associates to ensure prompt courteous service.
- Respond promptly in a tactful and professional manner to customer or associate complaints, requests, accidents, and questions.
- Use Computer Assisted Ordering (CAO) to manage ordering merchandise and supplies, ensure proper accounting and inventory balance during the Department Manager’s absence.
- Price and display merchandise, maintain signage, product rotation, freshness, quantity, quality and proper space allocation.
- Counsel associates in effective merchandising techniques, customer services and promotional activities.
- Follow company programs and policies regarding dress code, grooming, sanitation and a harassment‑free environment.
- Provide input to the Department Manager on budgets, goals and results.
- Communicate and interact with associates and customers to create a positive impression.
- Maintain equipment, facilities, floor, shelf and grocery areas to sanitary standards.
- Promote, communicate and implement company initiatives and process improvements to direct reports.
- Demonstrate aptitude to manage people and organize workloads.
- Perform any and all duties as assigned.
- Willingness to work flexible hours including mornings, afternoons, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as required.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to make intelligent decisions quickly.
- Ability to handle stressful situations calmly and make positive impressions on associates and customers.
- Skills for effective production, merchandising and customer service related to merchandise sales.
- Understanding of all key components of department operations (managing people, merchandising, CAO, inventory, shrink control, customer service, labor scheduling, expense control, etc.).
- Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations including employment practices and OSHA compliance.
- Qualified to operate power machinery and use tools such as power jacks, box cutters, label guns, balers, compactors, etc.
- Grocery retail work experience or backup manager experience.
- Past record reflecting dependability and integrity.
