Meter Technician

Overview

Join Golden Valley Electric Association as a Meter Technician First Year in Fairbanks, Alaska, and play a key role in ensuring accurate electric metering and reliable service for our members across Interior Alaska. In this role, you will install, read, inspect, maintain, connect, and disconnect electric meters for residential and commercial accounts while providing exceptional customer service and support in the field.

As a Meter Technician, you will perform meter inspections, troubleshoot metering issues, complete service orders, support outage restoration efforts, and assist with engineering field work that helps maintain the reliability of GVEA's electrical system.

With a competitive starting wage of $41.24 per hour per IBEW Agreement

GVEA is an electric cooperative that owns and maintains 3,491 miles of transmission and distribution lines, 35 substations, and 9 generating facilities. Our system is interconnected with Fort Wainwright, Eielson AFB, Fort Greely, Clear Space Force Station, the University of Alaska‑Fairbanks, and all electric utilities in the Alaska Railbelt, which extends from Homer to Fairbanks. As a Meter Technician, you will:

• Install, read, inspect, maintain, connect, and disconnect electric meters.
• Accurately document service activities to support billing and revenue collection.
• Diagnose and troubleshoot meter issues, inspect equipment for defects or unauthorized connections, and respond to member concerns regarding usage and billing.
• Support service orders and field operations, including delivering disconnect notices, collecting payments in the field, and ensuring work meets GVEA's safety standards and procedures.
• Assist with engineering and system operations by field surveys, power‑line patrols, pole attachment inspections, and outage restoration efforts.
• Work independently in a dynamic outdoor environment while providing excellent service and maintaining the reliability of GVEA's electric system.

Required:

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Valid Alaska driver’s license with a clean driving record.
• Current First Aid Certification or the ability to obtain it within three months of employment.

Preferred:

• Two years of related experience.
• Basic electrical knowledge.

Strong customer‑service skills, sound judgment, independence in field situations, safety consciousness, and the ability to work outdoors in all types of weather are essential.
