Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic II

As the Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic II, you will work onsite in Fairbanks, AK and will be responsible for performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on Yukon Equipment's fleet and service machinery. This role ensures equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company and regulatory standards. The position requires working both independently and collaboratively with other mechanics, providing technical expertise to support team and customer needs.

You may also interact with customers to assess issues, provide guidance, and ensure high-quality service delivery.

How will you do it?

  • Diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide variety of heavy equipment including, but not limited to, heavy-duty trucks and semi-tractors, material spreaders, 6-wheel drive military-type vehicles, excavators, hydraulic drive systems, high-pressure hydraulic systems, bulldozers (25 ton and smaller), graders, trailers, backhoes, skid steers, tractors, vacuum trucks, street sweepers, aerial towers, man lifts, and airport and highway snow removal equipment.
  • Receive repair orders from the Shop Supervisor and discuss equipment concerns, repair priorities, and expected turnaround timelines.
  • Perform preventive maintenance services including inspections, lubrication, fluid checks, and component adjustments to ensure optimal equipment performance.
  • Operate equipment for testing and verification purposes following repairs or maintenance.
  • Inspect and evaluate equipment to determine the extent of repairs, maintenance needs, and appropriate corrective action.
  • Communicate diagnostic findings, repair recommendations, and parts requirements to the Shop Supervisor or appropriate management.
  • Operate shop equipment, tools, and diagnostic equipment safely and effectively in accordance with manufacturer and company standards.
  • Research and identify required parts, components, and materials necessary to complete repair and maintenance activities.
  • Complete accurate documentation of repairs, parts used, labor hours, and maintenance activities on work orders and service records.
  • Inspect completed repairs and maintenance work to ensure equipment is functioning properly and meets safety and quality standards before returning equipment to service.
  • Provide technical assistance and troubleshooting support to customers and operators both in person and over the phone.
  • Contact equipment manufacturers or technical support representatives when additional diagnostic or repair guidance is required.
  • Address customer concerns and service issues in a professional and timely manner in accordance with Company guidelines.
  • Maintain a safe and clean work environment and report safety hazards, equipment defects, or unsafe conditions to the Supervisor Follow all company safety policies, environmental regulations, and applicable DOT or equipment safety requirements.
  • Assist with mentoring or providing guidance to apprentices or entry-level mechanics as needed.
  • Participate in required Company training, manufacturer training, and continuing education to maintain and improve technical skills.
  • Work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Functions:

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of the operation, repair, and maintenance of heavy-duty equipment, including diesel and gas-powered vehicles and machinery.
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues using diagnostic scanners, testing equipment, and electronic tools.
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices and equipment inspection procedures to ensure safe and reliable operation.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, equipment schematics, safety rules, operating instructions, and maintenance procedures.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills with the ability to evaluate problems, identify root causes, and implement effective repair solutions.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations and apply mechanical reasoning to diagnose equipment issues and complete repairs accurately.
  • Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate repair documentation, service records, and work orders.
  • Ability to use a standard computer or laptop and working knowledge of business software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office); ability to learn new systems and maintenance tracking software.
  • Ability to safely operate shop equipment, heavy machinery, and specialized service tools required for equipment diagnostics and repair.
  • Familiarity with hazardous materials handling, hazardous waste regulations, and safe disposal practices.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple repair assignments.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with supervisors, customers, vendors, and coworkers.
