Job Description & How to Apply Below

The Shelter Advocate provides compassionate, client-centered support to individuals impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault. This role requires engaging with clients in a respectful and empowering manner, offering advocacy, crisis intervention, and case management services to those residing in emergency shelters, transitional housing, or seeking support through phone and walk-in services. The Shelter Advocate also ensures clients have access to community resources, safety planning, and legal advocacy, while maintaining strict confidentiality in accordance with Alaska law.

In addition to direct advocacy, the Shelter Advocate plays a key role in residential shelter management, ensuring the safety and security of the facility. Responsibilities include coordinating house meetings, performing room checks, communicating maintenance needs, addressing housing issues through de-escalation or mediation, and maintaining a clean and organized shelter environment. This position also supports court advocacy, facilitates group sessions, and collaborates with community partners to provide comprehensive services to clients.

The ideal candidate has experience or education in human services, social work, or a related field, and demonstrates excellent interpersonal, communication, and computer skills. A commitment to confidentiality, cultural humility, and the agency’s mission is essential, as is the ability to work flexible shifts to provide 24-hour coverage. Knowledge of Alaskan cultures and local social service networks, as well as prior experience in domestic violence or sexual assault support, is highly valued.

The Shelter Advocate reports directly to the Advocacy Manager.
