The Division of Juvenile Justice is recruiting to fill a Juvenile Justice Counselor 1/2 position in Fairbanks at the Fairbanks Youth Facility Treatment Unit.
What You Will Be Doing:The FYF Treatment Unit is a 16-bed long‑term treatment program that provides an environment for the treatment of juvenile offenders that is safe and secure for the offender and the community with a focus on working with youth who have been identified as having mild to moderate neurobehavioral disorders as well as neurotypical youth. As a member of the FYF team, your role involves supervising juveniles with diverse emotional behaviors in both secure confinement and community‑based settings.
You’ll need to understand the legal aspects of juvenile residents in detention, treatment, and community environments. Responsibilities include maintaining order, facilitating group movements, and transporting juveniles into the community. Tasks also involve completing detention admissions, implementing treatment interventions, and integrating victim and community restoration principles. Managing a caseload of residents, you will review intake interviews, medical history, psychological assessments, and family background.
Additionally, you will recognize and document concerning behaviors, participate in skill‑building sessions, and provide consistent support for behavior regulation and correction. You may also lead competency development groups such as Prime for Life, Anger Replacement Training, and Life Skill Development.

As a Juvenile Justice Counselor, you will support this mission by working with the youth on their individual needs and maintaining the security and safety of residents, visitors, staff, and facility buildings.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:This position is located at Fairbanks Youth Facility, 1502 Wilbur Street in Fairbanks, Alaska. As a Juvenile Justice Counselor on a 24‑hour unit, you will cover various 8‑hour shifts that will include holidays, weekends, and occasional overtime. The shifts may be on both the Treatment and Detention Units depending on the needs of the facility. Escorts are a part of this position with various community work service and other outings including court and medical appointments and release escorts.
