Heavy Duty Mechanic, Automotive – Advanced Journey/Lead
The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) State Equipment Fleet is looking for a Heavy Duty Mechanic. Keep Alaska moving! Paid training is available for qualified applicants to obtain a CDL.
What you will be doingThe incumbent of this position is responsible to:
- Professionally maintain all heavy‑duty and light‑duty equipment and vehicles associated with the construction and maintenance of secondary roads, rural airports and other user agency vehicles operated in the area.
- Resolve unusual or complex equipment problems through a variety of techniques and methods; perform routine and specialized repair and maintenance on a variety of heavy equipment.
- Diagnose, maintain, repair and modify systems including transmissions, drive trains, suspension, engine and emission, fuel injection, hydraulic systems, and brake systems including air and electrical for light and heavy‑duty equipment.
As part of the State Equipment Fleet (SEF) team, you will have a direct impact on the department mission of “Keeping Alaskans Moving.” SEF's mission is to provide all state agencies with safe, economical vehicles they need to accomplish their mission.

Working EnvironmentThe Fairbanks shop is located at 2301 Peger Road. Traveling in small planes to maintain equipment in remote locations is possible in this position; travel consists of day trips and overnight stays.
Who we are looking for- Mechanical: Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, benefits, repair, and maintenance.
- Flexibility: Open to change and new information; rapidly adapts to new information, changing conditions, or unexpected obstacles.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Knowledge of motor vehicle engines, parts, and systems, including their design, uses, repair and maintenance.
- Self‑Management: Sets well‑defined and realistic personal goals; displays a high level of initiative, effort, and commitment towards completing assignments in a timely manner; works with minimal supervision; is motivated to achieve; demonstrates responsible behavior.
- A copy of your Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL), front and back (if applicable).

This position requires the incumbent to possess a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) per federal regulations. Applicant must register with the federal CDL Drug & Alcohol Testing Clearinghouse prior to performing safety sensitive duties and provide consent to the Employer to review driver information. Hire approval is conditional upon obtaining a Class A Alaska Commercial Driver’s License within 120 days of hire and signing an agreement to this effect.
Drugand Alcohol Policy
Selected candidates must comply with the DOT&PF Drug and Alcohol Policy. You cannot start work in a CDL position until management has received confirmation that you passed the pre‑employment drug test.
Tool AllowanceEmployees must provide their own hand tools. The position pays a bi‑weekly tool allowance as determined by LTC contract.
