Systems Engineer
The data analyst will be responsible for the analysis and reporting of data collected during radio frequency (RF) electronic warfare (EW) system technology demonstration events in a research laboratory setting. Demonstration events exercise RF EW systems in a dense RF signal environment to mature underlying technologies/system architectures and inform government-independent characterizations of system capabilities and technical risks. Systems demonstrated can include radar warning receivers (RWRs), RF electronic attack (EA) jammers, RF electronic support (ES) receivers, and their associated components.
Systems brought into the laboratory for demonstration may represent any DoD technology readiness level (TRL) 1-9.
What You’ll Get to Do:
- Data analysis and reporting on laboratory demonstration events. The data analyst is charged with providing system assessment reports, independent of program sponsors and systems development teams. These reports must address stakeholder technical objectives and characterize system capabilities and risk areas. The analyst is charged with conducting data analysis and when required, organizing data analysis efforts to be executed by supporting team members.
Assessment reports typically include textual explanations, data tables, data charts, and supporting visual images. These reports document progress toward achieving technical objectives or highlight notable technical risk areas.
- Support the development and execution of the data analysis plan for each demonstration event. Plans will ensure sufficient information is collected to determine if stakeholders test objectives were met, and to quantify the performance the system under test.
- Support execution of HITL demonstration events. The data analyst is charged with supporting execution of demonstration events in their portfolio, ensuring demonstration reporting objectives are accomplished, and supporting identification of EW system capability shortfalls. The RF signals analyst will become familiar with operational aspects of HITL simulation systems, as well as understanding how these systems affect the signal environment presented to the EW systems under demonstration.
The RF Engineer will support the operation of AF laboratory signal generation and data collection systems.
- One of the goals of this position is to work as part of a team to improve the ease with which synthetic battlespace simulations can be constructed and executed as required, while working towards the ability to generate the more complex RF signals required to represent future threats.
- Prepare custom analysis scripts as required in either Python or MATLAB. Modeling of SUT antenna parameters to provide guidance on expected outcomes of simulated target engagements. Work closely with the simulation designer to help with anticipating processing workload and predict possible trouble spots.
- Interface with EW system program stakeholders (e.g., government program offices, system developers, operational users) to understand system demonstration technical objectives, HITL simulation scenarios, system assessment performance measures, and assessment reporting objectives.
- Support development of Hardware In The Loop (HITL) simulation scenarios for execution in the AF laboratory or customer-housed, government-furnished simulator systems. The data analyst will become familiar with laboratory simulator system technical capabilities and limitations, and how these systems can be applied to the customer problem set. In this role the data analyst will develop an understanding emitters in the RF signal environment, including friendly, neutral, and adversary radar systems, civilian and military non-radar signals present in RF background environments, and other interfering signal sources such as onboard RF communications systems and onboard jammers.
