Senior Staff Accountant
The Staff Accountant, Senior for the mortgage finance department is responsible for performing a variety of day-to-day accounting activities that support the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of the organization's financial records. This role prepares reconciliations, records journal entries, monitors suspense and general ledger activity, and supports the monthly close process in accordance with internal policies and accounting standards. The Staff Accountant works closely with the broader accounting team to resolve reconciling items, respond to information requests, and maintain strong financial controls in a fast-paced mortgage banking environment.
Responsibilities:
- Perform general ledger reconciliations associated with mortgage loan closings and fundings and investigate reconciling items to support the accuracy and integrity of financial records.
- Record and validate closing-related accounting entries, ensuring loan activity is accurately reflected in the general ledger and subsidiary systems and in accordance with internal policies and accounting procedures.
- Prepare investor-related journal entries, including loan sale proceeds, gain/loss on sale calculations, purchase advice settlements, and pricing adjustments.
- Monitor and balance suspense accounts and other assigned accounts on a daily basis, escalating and resolving outstanding items promptly.
- Use accounting systems and related tools to respond to inquiries, compile data, and support management reporting needs.
- Assist with processing invoices, recording financial activity, and validating transactions in accordance with approval and control requirements.
- Support monthly close activities by preparing schedules, reconciling assigned accounts, and completing deliverables within established deadlines.
- Partner with the accounting team to resolve accounting issues and ensure compliance with applicable regulations, policies, and procedures.
Skills/
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of relevant work experience in accounting
- Bachelor's degree in accounting preferred, but not required. High school diploma required.
- Experience working in Accounting department of a financial institution preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products required.
- Good working knowledge of basic accounting and bookkeeping required.
- Good working knowledge of preparing bank and general ledger reconciliations required.
- Excellent problem-solving skills.
- Ability to apply principles of accounting in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong time-management skills and ability to meet deadlines.
