Anesthesiologist JOB FUNCTION

Responsible for overall provision, direction, and quality of all anesthesiology services provided to PSV patients.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Active, unrestricted medical license in Virginia
  • Active member of medical staff of Children’s National Health System, Washington D.C.
  • Active member of medical staff of PSV Ambulatory Surgery Center
  • Knowledge of or demonstrated intent to learn daily operations of the Ambulatory Surgery Center
  • Board certified anesthesiologist
  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES AS ANESTHESIOLOGIST Pre-Operative
    • Perform a pre-anesthetic evaluation and provide pre-operative instructions and preparation:
      An appropriate pre-anesthesia evaluation and examination is performed by an anesthesiologist, prior to anesthesia and surgery. In the event that non-physician personnel are utilized in the process, the anesthesiologist must verify the information and repeat and record essential key elements of the evaluation
    • Order and review pre-operative studies and consultations as medically indicated.
    • Ensure all ordered pre-anesthetic diagnostic tests results have been received and document review of said
    • Develop an anesthesia plan and discuss with the patient.
    • Ensure that pre-anesthetic equipment checklist(s) have been completed,
    Intra-Operative
    • Be available during induction, and throughout the procedure for consultation, if not personally administering the anesthetic
    • Immediate review prior to initiation of anesthetic procedures:
    • Perform Patient reevaluation
    • Check equipment, drugs and gas supply
    • Monitor patient
    • Record.
  • Amounts of all drugs and agents used, and times given.
  • The type and amounts of all intravenous fluids used and times given.
  • The technique(s) used.
  • Any Unusual events during the anesthesia period.
  • The status of the patient at the conclusion of anesthesia
  • Post Anesthesia
    • Determine if patient needs first stage recovery or meets the criteria that first stage recovery may be by-passed.
    • Continuously monitor the patient until the patient is in stable condition in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and care has been turned over to a PACU nurse.
    • Communicate to the PACU personnel the patient’s intra-operative course and pertinent medical history and shall coordinate the patient’s post-operative care plan.
    • Document on the Post Anesthesia Care Record all significant events of the peri-operative phase of patient care
    • Before discharge, evaluate each patient in accordance with applicable state health and safety laws for proper anesthesia recovery
    • Discharge patient once the established discharge criteria has been met and documented. .
    • Be responsible for care of the patient throughout the PACU stay.
    • Evaluate the patient for anesthetic recovery and discharge the patient from PACU care
    • Follow all commonly accepted infection control procedures and use personal protective devices, as appropriate
