Engineer III – Process Engineer, Wastewater Treatment

Zing Recruiting, in partnership with a leading public agency in the Fairfax, VA area, is seeking an Engineer III/Process Engineer with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship to support daily wastewater treatment process management, long‑term planning, and the evaluation of emerging and pilot‑scale wastewater treatment technologies. The process engineer will work with a variety of disciplines and backgrounds both in the office and in the field.

• Performs engineering analysis, daily and long‑term process monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization to ensure efficient and compliant operations.
• Conducts research and pilot studies on new technologies and process improvement.
• Works closely with the operation and maintenance group to implement process recommendations in the plant.
• Serves as project manager and/or technical lead during project activities.
• Serves as back up to other engineering positions. Supports other facility groups and branches.
• The work directly affects treatment process performance, system reliability, and regulatory compliance across the County’s wastewater network.

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, or closely related Engineering field
• Four years of progressively responsible wastewater process engineering experience

• 5 Years+ wastewater treatment process and/or unit operations experience related to large scale (>35 MGD) advanced wastewater treatment plants
• Experience ensuring compliance with and knowledge of the Clean Water Act and Clean Air Act and associated federal and state regulations as they relate to wastewater facilities
• Outstanding oral and written communications skills

$51.00 / hr + DOE

This role supports the Wastewater Treatment Division
, which serves ~1.1 million residents and manages:

• Treatment plants

• Combination of office, jobsite, and construction environments
• Regular coordination with consultants, operations personnel, and construction teams
• Emergency/on‑call support during critical events
