The Engineer, Journeyman at the Potomac River Test Range (PRTR) is involved in a range of tasks and responsibilities, which vary depending on industry and company. They independently evaluate, select, adapt, and modify standard techniques and criteria to plan and conduct engineering assignments. These roles require a combination of technical expertise, problem‑solving skills, and a collaborative mindset, essential in IT, engineering, and construction to deliver high‑quality projects and services.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
- Applies engineering principles, codes, and practices to support the RDT&E of weapons systems.
- Performs engineering tasks involving control systems, electronics, power, instrumentation, signal processing, radio‑frequency, mechanical, and aerospace disciplines.
- Applies aerospace engineering principles and concepts in the performance of test and evaluation of projectiles (guided and unguided).
- Coordinates with Data Acquisition Engineers to define instrumentation and measurement requirements to support data collection and analysis during test planning.
- Performs project work through knowledge of engineering practices and policies, devising new approaches to resolve problems.
- Operates with general instructions in an independent mode and receives guidance on special problems or when requested.
- Independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, making minor adaptations and modifications.
- Provides independent and professional support on portions of complex projects.
- Reviews specific assignment objectives, approaches, and possible solutions for accuracy and completeness.
- Independently performs a project assignment that involves complex features, guided by codes, standards, and other precedents of the discipline.
- Analyzes and evaluates the results of an analysis using techniques prescribed by senior engineers or supervisors.
- Accomplishes tasks requiring investigation of many variables.
- Proficiency in software development, hardware integration, and system design.
- Solves engineering problems and manages solutions effectively.
- Works with team members and professionals to ensure projects are completed on time and within budget.
- Creates technical reports and documentation to communicate project progress and outcomes.
- Engages in ongoing education and training to stay updated with industry trends and technologies.
- Other duties as assigned.
- A Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from an accredited college or university in an engineering, scientific, or technical discipline.
- Three (3) years of experience dealing with design, engineering, test, and evaluation of weapon systems components, subsystems, and systems.
- Solid foundation in the principles and practices of aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, or systems engineering.
- Strong understanding of T&E methodologies and techniques.
- Demonstrated ability to use test equipment and data analysis tools.
- Demonstrated communication and teamwork skills, essential for success in a T&E team environment.
- Proven ability to think critically and solve complex problems within the T&E process.
Skills and Qualifications
- Navy and/or Marine Corps related experience.
- Experience with specific weapons systems or T&E programs.
- Work is performed in an environmentally controlled office environment.
- Must be capable of sitting and entering data on a computer keyboard for extended periods of time.
- Must be able to view a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
- Must be capable of lifting 25 lbs. unassisted.
